It’s pretty obvious to me that whenever a moderator sees a topic even remotely related to the States, they just toss it straight into "The American Dream" section without a second thought.

Look, you’ll get what I’m saying—that whole thread about the father-in-law and the mother-in-law was actually a solid way to kick things off on this forum. And that one about Thanksgiving? That hit different. Even the visa discussion felt like something special.

It’s always the same routine on here. One person is deep in a debate about Thanksgiving plans, someone else is venting about their father-in-law and the struggles of a new immigrant son-in-law, one guy is obsessing over his H1 visa status, and then there's that twentieth person asking where they can pick up some McCormick seasoning.

Don't get mad at me, but I’m honestly just over this whole "American Dream" thing. It’s lost its charm.

Where did that thread go?

On the diaspora side of things.

For those of us living out the American Dream, our conversations usually boil down to a few core pillars:

1) Jobs—which operate on a totally different wavelength here compared to other immigrant groups elsewhere.

2) Food—another thing that’s uniquely specific to life here.

3) Free time—it’s diverse, sure, but the lifestyle is fundamentally different from the rest of the world.

4) Immigration—we get hit with endless questions about moving to the US, so we try to give straight answers.

5) American traditions—things people back in Europe think they "get" because they've seen them in Hollywood movies. I say movies, not documentaries. That was a tough lesson for us: we thought we knew everything about America too, only to realize we had to separate the Hollywood myth from the actual reality once we landed.

The moderators seem bored by all this, so they just dump everything into one massive thread. It results in everyone shouting over each other in the same space—one person talking food, another about visas, someone else about lawyers, then cars, taxes, local comfort foods, or whether or not to start celebrating Thanksgiving.

That's the gist of it. I don't see why every single topic related to the US has to be crammed into one single bucket.

And honestly, looking at everyone else in the diaspora 🙂 what’s your actual plan? Are we talking about having specific threads for work, moving to the US, what people do for fun, traffic jams, or maybe even weather forecasts...?
There’s so much room for endless chatting and just blowing up the boards if we go that route. Following that logic, we’d basically need ten different sections for Canada, Australia, or even the UAE too...

It doesn't have to be just one single topic, but we definitely can't have fifty different ones either...

Break it down into at least a few different threads. Right now, we've got everything from cooking tips to legal stuff all shoved into one giant "The American Dream" topic. Reading through it gives me straight-up ADHD—one minute it's about almond recipes, then it's McCormick, then it jumps to visas, rent prices, Green Cards, recent immigrants, or citizenship... it's a mess.

crimsonsailor7 said:Plus, there's massive potential for endless chatting and spamming..

That’s exactly how "The American Dream" thread looks right now. I honestly don't know if it can get any worse than this.

We're killing off potentially great discussions because nobody can track a conversation when you have to hunt for the 11th post on page 57 just to answer the 7th post on page 56, all while six other random topics are fighting for your attention in the same thread.

Right now, we have all this random junk—cooking tips, grocery hauls, everything—all crammed into one massive topic called "The American Dream." It gives me actual ADHD just trying to read through it. One second I'm reading about almonds, the next it's about McCormick seasoning, then suddenly it's an H1 visa discussion, followed by rent prices, Green Cards, fresh immigrants, and citizenship talks...

The US section already has specific topics:
- living in the US,
- immigration, emigration, Green Cards, education, and jobs in the US...

The problem isn't the structure; it's that nobody alive actually reads the rules and guidelines, which couldn't be any clearer. Even if the three of us spent 29 hours a day trying to reorganize things, we couldn't fix this mess if people wouldn't cooperate.

If users would just stop clinging to that ridiculous mantra that you are against us and instead just report a post that's in the wrong place—rather than quoting it dozens of times and replying to it just to tear it apart... life would be a whole lot easier for everyone.

But noooo... one person answers a question, someone else screams "idiot, wrong thread!", five more people chime in to "upvote" the correction, the twelfth person corrects the original info provider, and the fifteenth person files a report...

What exactly do you expect from us?

Why call us out when you find yourselves stuck in the middle of a total disaster, yet spit on us when we do everything in our power to prevent that exact disaster? Then suddenly, we're the villains, the bans-happy monsters, the freaks...

Is it really that hard to realize that we are breaking our backs every single day just to make this forum a better place for you, rather than trying to persecute anyone personally?

Even before you bother asking on the unknown forum, this thread just earned you a massive penalty. You’ve basically handed us 100 points on a silver platter for violating PDF rules (complaining about that), being outright insulting (total delusions), and flooding the place with spam (that whole rant about McCormick).

Calling something "schizophrenic" isn't an insult... it's actually used all the time to describe things that are just straight-up contradictory.

www.m-w.com:

"1
: a psychotic disorder characterized by loss of contact with the environment, by noticeable deterioration in the level of functioning in everyday life, and by disintegration of personality expressed as disorder of feeling, thought (as delusions), perception (as hallucinations), and behavior —called also dementia praecox — compare paranoid schizophrenia
2
: contradictory or antagonistic qualities or attitudes <both parties … have exhibited schizophrenia over the desired outcome — Elizabeth Drew>
— schizo·phren·ic adjective or noun
— schizo·phren·i·cal·ly adverb "

The free dictionary.com

schizophrenic [ˌskɪtsəʊˈfrɛnɪk]
adj
1. (Medicine / Pathology) exhibiting symptoms of schizophrenia
2. Informal experiencing or maintaining contradictory attitudes, emotions, etc.

Let me recap:

"Life in the USA" has turned into this massive, sprawling mess.

Across three pages, I’ve listed about twenty different topics, line by line, with everyone jumping in with completely random comments. It’s just twenty separate conversations tangled into one giant knot. I have no idea who actually finds that kind of chaos helpful.

To me, it doesn't feel like a conversation; it feels like a huge pile of disjointed chatter that makes zero sense. It’s nearly impossible to follow if you're trying to find an answer to something mentioned three pages ago.

Is anyone actually keeping track of what's happening in there?

Look, let me paint a picture of what’s actually bothering me. I’ll list the topics that have been cluttering up the "life in the USA" thread over the last three pages:

1. Firefighters in the USA
2. Salary levels in New York City
3. Is living in the USA actually worth it?
4. Green Card Lottery (Can you believe it: Those of us already living in the USA aren't even interested in reading about how to snag a visa?!! 😁 Sometimes we're willing to point someone toward a specific detail, but everything is already out there online without us needing to play instructor)
5. Does it make sense to go back to school after high school or college?
6. Heading to America via a J-1 visa through Community College.
7. A totally lost user asking about a visa for Spain.
(4.. The lottery again)
8. Enrolling in Community College / TOEFL prerequisites
9. Working on a J-1 visa
10. Our take on the prospects for getting into college or grad school for PR/IT/marketing
11. Someone sent in a visa application and is now asking what it means that they got a slip with a barcode on it.
12. Someone here is getting worked up because nobody has answered their question yet (the one mentioned above).
(4. The lottery again)

13. Should I be emailing my resume for job postings in California...?
(12. That annoyed guy just copies and pastes his question again... on the same page... 😁 )

(4. More lottery talk...)

14. A little bit of spam, followed by a few "sweet" little... well, let's just say profanities... hey, nobody noticed, right?

15. Tourist visas

16. Using a Community College visa to try and pivot to an immigrant visa.

So... I just wanted to give a quick overview...

It looks like "life in the USA" has turned into a platform where prospective immigrants just hunt for info on moving to the USA. The actual discussion intended for talking about life here has completely sunk.

I don't see any comments from the people who used to actually talk about life in the USA. It feels like they've been pushed out. They basically told us our conversations about grocery stores, culture, or American holidays were uninteresting. Called them spam.

Those of us who actually used to chat about life in the USA gave up on the thread... because the thread itself has become the real spam—no flow, just disjointed chatter.

A handful of interesting discussions about life in the USA that were started as separate threads were forcibly moved into "life in the USA," where they just died because they're buried under endless questions about visas.

placidfox55 said:The thread that was supposed to be our go-to spot for all things visa talk just totally sank into the depths...

That just isn't true... 😉

If you’re sitting there expecting us to spin up ten different dedicated threads just for you, it's honestly not going to happen... It's the exact same story when people start asking about Canada, Australia, or Germany, too. Look, we aren't all playing on the same level here, and we can't cater to every single niche request... Besides, we already have the Gastronomy section, the off topic area, and plenty of space for socializing and coffee...

I know you guys aren't going to get it. Honestly, I agree with you. Maybe the folks living abroad in Canada or Australia would understand me better. Or maybe a few people over in Germany.

Back home, whether it's for better or worse, you just don't see where I'm coming from.

Maybe that’s actually a good thing. Every once in a while (whenever I drop by this forum), you remind me that even though we speak the same language, I don't really fit into the culture here anymore.

It’s a hard truth, for better or worse. It doesn't really matter. What matters is that I'm reminded of it. And for that, I appreciate you.
