So, here’s the situation. I’m 17, standing at 5'10", and weighing about 163 lbs. I’ve been hitting the gym for a month now. After my workouts, I usually have some low-fat cottage cheese mixed with bananas, and sometimes I'll throw in some yogurt too. Unfortunately, I can't afford any whey protein or supplements right now. My question is: is it actually possible to see real, significant results without relying on whey protein or all that other supplement stuff?

Thanks

Don't obsess over supplements. Fix your actual diet first. Bump up your protein intake, slash saturated fats to an absolute minimum, and make sure you're getting enough complex carbohydrates—you need those to fuel progress just as much as the protein does. If you really want to spend money, maybe grab some multivitamins or minerals, because I highly doubt your current diet is diverse enough to cover all your bases.

He's spot on.

Supplements aren't really the magic bullet people think they are. Just get your nutrition in order, hit the gym consistently, and you'll definitely start seeing results. 🙂

Supplements might give you a bit of a boost in the short term—it’s a nice little nudge, I suppose—but when you look at the long game, everything really boils down to how hard you're actually putting in the work at the gym and, well, whatever hand you were dealt genetically... if you ask me,

What does it mean when they say I can help out on a short-term basis?

Thanks for all the advice and input. Regardless, I've decided to just take a month to see how things play out

I'm not quite following either.
Whey is just a protein source—plain and simple.
So, whether you're sipping whey or eating chicken breasts, it's more or less the same thing.

Because it gets absorbed by the muscles much faster, which means it stores away more quickly in the muscle tissue itself.

Well, I suppose if you're just starting out, throwing some protein shakes at your post-workout routine or adding creatine might give you a bit of an edge—maybe speed things up during those initial four or five months—but when you look at the long game? After years of training? In my opinion, it really all comes down to how you actually train and whether your body chooses to respond to that stimulus or not.

I mean, I hit the gym pretty regularly and don't have any issues there. My real question is, will I actually notice a difference if I take whey for, say, two months while keeping up my training routine?

Nah, you can't. If you're broke, you probably aren't eating right either, because let's face it—real food costs way more than a tub of cheap powder.

So, I've decided to start using whey protein... any recommendations on which one I should grab?

dustymoose53 said:It’s simply because it hits the muscles faster—basically, quicker absorption.

So what? If you're hitting up high-quality protein sources every few hours, your body will always have the amino acids it needs.
Don't fall for those marketing gimmicks.
Personally, I drink whey too—especially right after a workout—mostly for convenience, but I don't actually think it makes some magical difference.

Dymatize Elite—cheap, but hits the spot.
Twinlab Whey Fuel—basically the same deal as Dymatize, price and quality-wise.

Personally, I'm leaning toward Dymatize..

Is that Dymatize Elite actually whey protein? If it isn't, please just give me some actual whey protein recommendations.
