CONCACAF
July 4th - July 18th

Host: USA

Group A
USA
Mexico
Jamaica
Haiti

Group B
Canada
Costa Rica
Panama
Trinidad and Tobago

Semifinals follow the group stage. This tournament matters... critical for World Cup and Olympic qualification...
Fun fact: Haiti finished qualifying with a goal difference of 44:0😁

Africa Women Cup of Nations
July 2nd - July 23rd

Host: Morocco

Group A
Morocco
Burkina Faso
Senegal
Uganda

Group B
Cameroon
Zambia
Togo
Tunisia

Group C
Nigeria
South Africa
Burundi
Botswana

The two best third-place teams will round out the quarterfinals...
Semifinalists secure World Cup spots... losers play for intercontinental qualifiers...
Fun fact: Only two teams have truly ruled the continent... Nigeria 11 times and Equatorial Guinea twice...

Copa America Femenina
July 8th - July 30th

Host: Colombia

Group A
Colombia
Chile
Ecuador
Paraguay
Bolivia

Group B
Brazil
Argentina
Uruguay
Peru
Venezuela

Top two from each group advance to the semifinals...
There will also be a match for 5th place regarding intercontinental qualifications...

Fun fact: Bolivia's peak was back in 1995 when they took 5th place... there were only 5 teams then... their goal difference was 1-44😁

I suppose we could probably add one more tournament to our tracking list here, seeing as everything else besides the Euros is already gathered in one place.🙂

OFC Women's Nations Cup
July 13th - July 30th

Host: Fiji

Group A
Tonga
Cook Islands
Samoa

Group B
Papua New Guinea
Tahiti
Vanuatu

Group C
Fiji
New Caledonia
Solomon Islands

The top two third-place teams will round out the quarterfinal matchups. Unfortunately, winning doesn't grant an automatic ticket to the World Cup since New Zealand is hosting part of the World Cup, so they’ll just get a spot in the intercontinental play-off instead.
A little fun fact: Historically, this trophy has only been won by New Zealand (6 times), Australia (3 times), and Chinese Taipei (2 times). Since none of those teams are actually participating this year, I guess we're due for a brand new champion.😁

Naturally, I'll be watching. My money is on Morocco to take it all.👍

The seeding in these qualifiers wasn't an accident. Haiti absolutely dismantled the favorites, Mexico, with a 3-0 win.

I suppose it’s just unfortunate when you go through the trouble of winning a continental championship, only to find out you still haven't actually secured an automatic spot in the World Cup.🤷

Though, I guess we should mention those first two goals came from penalties, and then Mexico picked up a red card. It’s also worth noting that the US was the first team to clinch a World Cup berth by making it to the semifinals.👍

Group A standings and scores:

Morocco 1, Burkina Faso 0
Senegal 2, Uganda 0
Burkina Faso 0, Senegal 1
Uganda 1, Morocco 3
Morocco 1, Senegal 0
Burkina Faso 2, Uganda 2

image

Since they split the points in that final match, I guess neither Burkina Faso nor Uganda stands a chance at making the quarterfinals. It seems unlikely they'll land in those top two spots among the best third-place finishers.

Group B standings:

Cameroon 0:0 Zambia
Tunisia 4:1 Togo
Zambia 1:0 Tunisia
Togo 1:1 Cameroon
Cameroon 2:0 Tunisia
Zambia 4:1 Togo

image

We finally have our first quarterfinal matchup. It looks like Zambia will be facing off against Senegal, which I guess marks their very first time ever making it out of the group stage. The Tunisian side also managed to advance—they were one of those two lucky third-place teams—so this is apparently their first time playing in a quarterfinal, too. 👍

Group C, the final tallies:

Nigeria 1:2 South Africa
Burundi 2:4 Botswana
South Africa 3:1 Burundi
Botswana 0:2 Nigeria
South Africa 1:0 Botswana
Nigeria 4:0 Burundi

I suppose Botswana managed to clinch a quarterfinal spot in their very first appearance here. 🙏

The quarterfinal matchups are set:

July 13th. Morocco vs Botswana
July 13th. Zambia vs Senegal
July 14th. South Africa vs Tunisia
July 14th. Cameroon vs Nigeria

Panama 0:1 Canada
Canada 2:0 Costa Rica

So, the teams moving on to the 2023 World Cup are Jamaica, Canada, Costa Rica, and the USA. 🎉 I suppose Haiti and Panama will have to settle for the intercontinental play-offs instead. 👍

Upcoming semifinal matchups:

July 15th

Canada vs Jamaica - 4:00 AM

The quarterfinals:

I suppose if we’re talking about Zambia, we might as well look at it through an American lens to make sense of things. It’s a massive territory, much like a huge stretch of the Midwest or parts of Texas, though obviously with a completely different set of challenges. I guess you could compare its economic situation to some of the fluctuations we see in the Rust Belt, only on a national scale. Maybe it’s just a matter of how resources are managed, but it seems like a complex puzzle. Regardless, it’s interesting to think about how these global dynamics play out. It’s a 1-1 draw after regulation, and they’ve headed to a penalty shootout. They’re currently sitting at 4-2 after 11 kicks. Not exactly the blowout we were looking for, I guess.

I guess we’re looking at 70 over 61. Maybe it’s worth noting that Ndiaye is involved here too.

I guess I'll just leave this here.

I suppose I should probably mention Chanda., I suppose there isn't much to say about Zulu. It’s just another entry in the books, I guess. Maybe it carries some weight for certain people, but from where I'm sitting, it doesn't change much of anything. Not that anyone was really asking., I suppose I should probably say something here, though I’m not entirely sure what there is to add. It feels like we're just circling the drain at this point. Maybe I'm overthinking it, but it seems like everyone is just waiting for someone else to make the first move. It's all a bit much, I guess., Mweemba, I suppose I should start by saying that Nali hasn't actually posted anything here yet. It’s hard to have much of a conversation when there isn't any substance to work with, I guess. Maybe they're just lurking, or perhaps they're still gathering their thoughts before deciding whether or not this forum is worth their time. Either way, it's all quite quiet on their end for now. / I suppose there’s a certain inevitability to it. The leaves start turning, the air gets that specific crispness, and suddenly everyone is obsessed with pumpkin spice everything. It’s a bit much, I guess. There is a quiet, almost somber beauty in the transition, though—that slow descent into the colder months before the chaos of the holidays hits. Maybe that's why people cling to the aesthetic so hard. It’s a fleeting moment of calm, provided you can ignore the constant commercial push., I suppose I should probably mention Diop., I suppose we’re talking about Baldé now. I guess there isn't much else to say, really. Maybe., I suppose I should probably address the Diakhaté situation. It’s one of those things that just seems to linger, isn't it? Maybe it's just me, but I find the whole thing rather tedious. I guess we could look at it from a few different angles, though I doubt it would change much. It's all quite predictable, really.

I suppose there’s some sort of fascination with Morocco lately, but I honestly don't see the appeal. It feels like one of those places people mention just to sound worldly during a dinner party. Maybe it's fine, I guess, if you're into that sort of thing. Personally, I'd rather stick to somewhere a bit more predictable. Maybe a 2:1 score for Botswana? I guess we'll see how that plays out.

Mssoudy 3., Mrabet 59. / 6. Dithebe

The women's national teams from Zambia and Morocco have done it. Aside from making it all the way to the semifinals, they’ve managed to qualify for the World Cup for the very first time in their history. I guess we're finally seeing some real progress on the global stage. 🎉

The goalkeeper from Cameroon got caught out by a slow shot😂—just a lazy center shot and it slipped right through her hands🙂

The keeper ended up taking the final penalty for Zambia and scored👍

Quarterfinals:

The US lost to Cameroon, 1-0. I guess things just didn't go our way on the pitch today. Maybe we were outclassed, or maybe we just lacked that final bit of clinical finishing. It’s hard to say for sure, really. Nigeria.

I suppose there isn't much to say about Ajibade. It’s just one of those things.

South Africa 1:0 Los Angeles

September 13th.

It looks like the women's teams from Nigeria and South Africa have managed to pull it off. Aside from clinching their spots in the semifinals, they’ve officially punched their tickets to the World Cup. I guess we'll be seeing them on the big stage after all. 🎉 That would be Nigeria's ninth time qualifying, while South Africa would be making their second appearance on the world stage.

The matchups for the playoffs:

17.07. The matchup between the USA and Cameroon.
17.07. It’s Senegal against Tunisia. I guess we'll see how that plays out.

The winners of the play-offs move on to the Intercontinental. The playoffs. I guess we’re finally getting to that part of the season where everything gets incredibly tense and everyone starts acting like their life depends on a game played with a ball. It’s interesting how much weight people put on this, though I suppose there's a certain logic to it. Maybe. Everything feels a bit more high-stakes now, which usually just means more stress for no particular reason. We'll see how it plays out. Regarding the qualification for the 2023 World Cup. 👍

The semifinal matchups are:

18.07. The matchup between Morocco and Nigeria is finally here. I guess we’ll see if the North African side can actually hold their own against the powerhouse from West Africa. It should be an interesting one, maybe.
18.07. The matchup between Zambia and South Africa.

Semifinals:

USA 3, Costa Rica

Sonnett 34, Pugh 45+3, Sanchez 90+5.

Full match replay

The US Women's National Team cruised into the final with total dominance. 🎉 Honestly, they had so many scoring chances that it’s almost a miracle Costa Rica walked away with their dignity intact. I guess we should probably note that the Americans picked up 16 fouls during this one, which is actually their highest tally in their last 37 matches. 😲

Semifinals:

Canada 3:0 Jamaica

Fleming 18', Chapman 64', Leon 76'.

Match Summary

The Canadians managed all three goals off crosses—two headers and one with the foot, I guess. 😬

It looks like we’re getting a sixth showdown between the USA and Canada in the finals. This is basically a rematch of the final from four years ago when the Americans took it 2-0. Historically speaking, the Canadians haven't exactly had much luck beating the US in these championship matchups. 👍

Jamaica is out here defending their bronze medal, while Costa Rica's best run was grabbing silver back in 2014, along with a bronze in 1998.

Third-place match:

July 19th Costa Rica vs Jamaica - 1:00 AM

Final:

July 19th

USA vs Canada - 4:00 AM

Semifinals:

Zambia 0:1 South Africa

90+4. (11m) Motlhalo

South Africa pulls off a massive upset against Zambia, clinching it with a penalty in the dying seconds of the match! 🎉

Morocco 1:1 Nigeria (5-4, 11m)

Mssoudy 66'. / 62. (OT) Mrabet

Penalty Shootout:

Mrabet, Chebbak, Redouani, El Chad, Ayane / Chikwelu, Onumonu, Otu, Plumptre, Monday

The home team somehow stumbled their way into the final in what was honestly a pretty embarrassing display. I guess you could say they got lucky, considering the officials missed not one, but two red cards—both times after VAR intervened 🤦. Nigeria actually played most of the game down a player and still managed to hold them to a draw through regulation and extra time, but Onumonu’s failed penalty basically handed away their shot at a 12th title. 🕺

Third Place Match:

July 22nd Nigeria vs Zambia - 10:00 PM

Final:

July 23rd Morocco vs South Africa - 10:00 PM

Just by making it this far on home soil, Morocco has already caused quite a stir, since they've never even made it out of the group stage before. 🙏 Meanwhile, South Africa has been stuck with silver five different times, so they go in as slight favorites, looking to finally grab that trophy they've been chasing for so long. 🎉

Third-Place Match:

Costa Rica 0:0 Jamaica (AET 0:1)

102nd minute

Match Summary

Jamaica managed to defend the bronze they secured four years ago. 🙏 Both sides hit the woodwork twice, but the breakthrough finally came in the 102nd minute when Kalyssa Van Zanden capitalized on a lovely pass from Spence to clinch the win. 🎉

Final:

USA 1:0 Canada

Morgan 78' - PK

Alex Morgan—well, it probably had to be her, right? 😍 That marks the ninth time the United States has claimed the North American championship title. 🎉 Canada fell in the final, leaving them with two trophies to their name. The lone goal arrived in the 78th minute after defender Chapman fouled Beckie inside the box, prompting the referee, Katia García from Mexico, to point to the penalty spot. Alex Morgan, arguably one of the greatest players to ever play the game, stepped up, fooled Sheridan, and buried it to secure the championship. 🙂

Golden Glove: Kailen Sheridan (CAN)
Golden Boot: Julia Grosso (CAN)
Best Young Player: Melchie Dumornay (JAM)
