I don't have anything against Lord of the Rings. It's a solid movie, and it gets aired every year anyway. Instead of scheduling it for 9:30 PM when it would end right when The Godfather starts at 8:00, you know? 😉

But the truth is, this movie has been forgotten, and pretty thoroughly at that.

What really struck me when I watched this for the first time was the ending, and even now, seeing it again, I find myself completely overwhelmed by how it concludes. And then there is that iconic diner scene 🙏

"Okay, I'll make it as easy for you as I can. I'd like an omelet, plain, and a chicken salad sandwich on wheat toast, no mayonnaise, no butter, no lettuce . . . now all you have to do is hold the chicken, bring me the toast, give me a check for the chicken salad sandwich, and you haven't broken any rules."

"You want me to hold the chicken?,"

"I want you to hold it between your knees." 🤣

It is quite a shame that he eventually moved into commercial work, though I suppose he was still making excellent films and playing such wonderful characters during that period

🙏 yeah, yeah, that scene is absolute perfection. If it isn't too much trouble, could you please recommend a few similar movies that capture that sense of rebellion or freedom?

As for the movie itself, I personally found the masters to be quite terrible, mostly because I am such a huge fan of the books🙂

Well, then stay with Jack, specifically the younger Jack. I guess those films that feel free usually follow this order from him. Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, Carnal Knowledge, The King of Marvin Gardens (same director as Five Easy Pieces), The Last Detail 🙏 and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (that one is pure freedom and rebellion)

Maybe also check out The Passenger by Antonia. It’s incredible what was happening during that era; they’re all great films. It's all within a six-year span, but watch out—I left one out because it isn't quite what you asked for, and that's CHINATOWN. It was recently named the best movie ever. You should see it even if there's no sense of freedom, mostly because it has the best screenplay ever written.

And all of that happened in the '70s 🙏 pretty insane run. Enjoy the mix of McQueen + Dean + Bogart = Nicholson😁

I'm looking now, and it turns out Ebert put Five Easy Pieces on his list of best films. Interesting.

I was actually just thinking about making a post about my favorite settings when this thread popped up! I caught it on NBC yesterday and ended up Rewatching it on DVD immediately 😁 It would be so cool to know what kind of directing notes Nicholson got for that scene where she gets into the car and just completely loses it 😁 Seriously, one of the most iconic movie moments ever 🙂
