The 60s "The Green Hornet" TV series, based on the comic books, actually rode the coattails of the "Batman" show (you know, the one with the colorful "POW!" and "BAM!" graphics every time a hero landed a punch). Unlike its predecessor, though, "The Green Hornet" didn't really take off and got axed after just one season. It only gained traction years later because the guy playing Kato was none other than the legendary martial arts icon Bruce Lee. Back then, Lee was just a nobody, but once he became a massive star, people started looking back at the show with fresh eyes.
Fast forward about fifty years to the era of endless reboots, sequels, and comic book adaptations, and Hollywood producers decided it was time for a big-screen treatment. They tapped comedian Seth Rogen for the lead—he even dropped about 30 pounds just to fit the part. On top of that, he’s also one of the guys behind the script. Honestly, a lot of fans weren't exactly thrilled with that casting choice. As for the role of Kato, they went with Jay Chou, a Taiwanese actor and pop star. Originally, Stephen Chow—the mastermind behind hits like "Kung Fu Hustle" and "Shaolin Soccer"—was set to direct and star, but he ended up walking away due to creative clashes with the studio.
Alongside Seth Rogen and Jay Chou, the cast features Cameron Diaz, Edward Furlong, Edward James Olmos, Tom Wilkinson, and the widely acclaimed Christoph Waltz playing the villain.
The directing duties fell to Michel Gondry, the guy behind "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Human Nature," and several others. The film has a $90 million budget and is slated to hit theaters on January 14, 2011...
