The answer is right there in the title. I’m relatively new to the world of PC building, and after falling down several research rabbit holes, I’ve realized I might be spinning my wheels without much direction. To be perfectly honest, I’d rather ask for help now than spend a fortune later only to realize I picked a component that clashes with everything else. Could someone please put together a solid configuration for me? (And if it's an option, I'd love to look into a custom version of the graphics card). Also, if you have any recommendations on where to source parts—maybe somewhere like Micro Center, Newegg, or Amazon—that would be incredibly helpful.

I’d honestly go with the i7 5820K, an EVGA GTX 1070 FTW, and 16GB of RAM... I don't think I'd drop $733 just to squeeze out a 20% boost in FPS, especially if you're sticking to a 1080p monitor.

I believe I have a solid foundation here for my upcoming build. To me, the processor isn't the absolute star of the show—it just needs to be powerful enough to ensure I'm not bottlenecking the GPU. I'm considering an i5-12600K; from what I gather, that chip should be capable of carrying me through another two or three generations of graphics cards without breaking a sweat.

The 1070 is plenty capable. Pairing it with a 5820k gives you a decent path for upgrades later. Since games are getting more CPU-heavy, those 6 cores are a much smarter investment than jumping from a 1070 to an RTX 3080.

Here’s how I’d do it:

1 x MSI X570 Motherboard
1 x INTEL Core i7-5820K (3.30GHz,1.5MB,15MB,140 W,2011-3) Box, N/A
1 x EVGA GTX 1070 FTW, 8GB GDDR5
1 x Zalman Z3+, 4x120mm, USB3.0 black
1 x Fortron Raider S 550W, 80+ SILVER - 60mj.
4 x Kingston 4GB 2400MHz DDR4 CL15 DIMM HyperX Black Fury, EAN: 740617244335
1 x Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD, 64MB, 7200rpm, High-Performance
1 x SanDisk Ultra II 240GB SSD, 2.5” 7mm, SATA 6 Gbit/s, Read/Write: 550 MB/s / 500 MB/s, Random Read/Write IOPS 91K/83K, retail
1 x Cooler SCYTHE Ninja 4 SCNJ-4000

Total: $4230

That’s a fair point, and there is certainly some truth to what you’re saying. Still, I find myself leaning more toward the EVGA GTX 1070 FTW. What’s your take on that one?

It's all basically the same crap in different boxes. One might have a better heatsink, another might push slightly higher clocks, depends on what you're hunting for.
Differences will probably just be a few FPS.

He should just toss in extra $83 for this case if he's buying from Micro Center. It'll fit his budget anyway

What's the deal with the 4x4GB RAM setup? Did it end up being cheaper or what?

Quad-channel, and I honestly doubt you'll need more than 32GB for gaming and everything else.

8 RAM slots? lol 😵

makes sense

Anyway, that motherboard rating on Amazon isn't great
three stars is basically a garbage average; people are running into all sorts of issues

This one could work too, I guess. It’s got some extra room.
