An exceptional horror film. A pure, unadulterated horror experience. It functions as an anthology of multiple tales.

Prior to viewing this motion picture, I didn't truly feel the spirit of Halloween, but after experiencing this, I find myself hesitant to even step outside after dark on October 31st.

You can find this film available for rent at your local video rental shop.

I watched it and it’s actually a solid movie. Aside from Halloween, it’s the best film I've seen tackle this subject. I usually don't care for movies that juggle multiple storylines at once, but this worked for me. It was interesting. That little kid was the most engaging part of the whole thing. He was cute until he pulled off that mask—man, he was hideous.🤣🤣

This movie is a mess—everything from the wooden, unbelievable acting to the cheap pacing and a plot that honestly could have been ten times better.

If I were, say, 12 or 13 years old, maybe this would actually impress me since it’s clearly aimed at that age group, but for anyone else? It just feels totally fake.
In terms of quality, it's right up there with "Drag Me to Hell" because they’re both equally bad. Sure, the cinematography is pretty and everything looks nice on screen, but there’s zero substance behind it. When I think back to "Halloween" (1978), man, where did all that tension and seriousness go? Even Rob Zombie did a decent job when you compare his "Halloween" (2007) to "Trick 'r Treat" (2008).

There is so much nonsense in here—just a mountain of stupidity. There isn't a single scene worth watching; it’s just mindless fluff designed to trick kids all over the country into wasting their money on a movie ticket.

All in all, it's a garbage film. I gave it a 2/10 on IMDb, and honestly, I was struggling not to give it a 1.

I’d heard nothing but rave reviews about this movie—people calling it a masterpiece and a total "must-watch." Honestly, after finally sitting down to view it, I was just stunned. It was a ninety-minute snooze fest, basically a fairy tale about Jack and Mary, and it didn't have a single ounce of actual horror in it; even Scooby-Doo felt more exciting and fast-paced than this! This film was easily one of the biggest letdowns I've ever experienced. From the directing to the acting, everything was subpar, so I tossed it straight into the recycling bin without a second thought. All in all, I won't be giving this one a second chance!

I don't have such an awful opinion of that movie, to be honest 🙂 It didn't exactly blow my mind—it wasn't exactly a masterpiece—but I suppose it's fine if you just need something to kill some time 😁 Obviously, the original Halloween (1978) is better, but this is definitely an improvement over the most recent Halloween release (if I recall correctly, I haven't seen a horror flick quite that bad 🤣).

Not even for that. 👎

It’s absolute garbage—honestly, it makes me sick. It’s a total waste of space, nothing but pure commercial fluff. There isn't an ounce of actual horror in there, and frankly, it barely qualifies as a movie.

Chloe Allen said:Of course the 1978 version of Halloween is better.

Those two movies only share the setting of Halloween; there isn't much else to them. To be fair, there are some nods to the holiday, like in the beginning of Halloween when you see that married couple. I have a simple question: which film better represents the true spirit of Halloween?

So, here's a simple question: which film actually does a better job of capturing the true spirit of Halloween?

Well, obviously the 1978 version of Halloween. I mean, Trick or Treat was clearly made more as a bit of a joke, so I don't really take it seriously compared to that first masterpiece. And I have no idea why anyone would think the newer remake from 2007 is any better than the original—to me, that new one was just total garbage 🤷 It wasn't interesting, it wasn't fun, I could barely even sit through it... I probably wouldn't have even bothered if I hadn't already been stuck in the theater 😬

I honestly have no idea why anyone would prefer that 2009 remake over the first one; in my opinion, that new version is complete garbage. 🤷 I didn't find it interesting or even remotely fun. I barely made it through the film. Honestly, I probably wouldn't have sat through it if I hadn't already been at the theater. 😬

Explain how exactly it captured the essence of Halloween better. I am feeling quite exhausted after the holiday festivities.I still can't quite wrap my head around why people complain about *Trick 'r Treat*. Halloween is a slasher. *Trick 'r Treat* is a horror comedy—an omnibus tribute to other horror films.

David Price5 said:I mean, if you really want me to dive into it—how exactly the film manages to capture that specific feeling—I suppose it comes down to the atmosphere. The reason it's good is , because IT truly captures The essence of Halloween. It isn't just about the jumpscares or the gore, which can sometimes feel a bit cheap, but rather that creeping sense of dread that settles in your stomach when the sun goes down. It's All about being a Kid on Halloween and hearing urban legends , and following Halloween traditions. You know that feeling? That mixture of being absolutely terrified but also being completely unable to look away? The movie taps into that exact nostalgia—that childhood sensation where every shadow looks like a monster and every creak in the floorboards feels like something is watching you. It leans into those old stories we used to whisper about around campfires, making the terror feel almost... personal. For the rest of us who love Halloween, it hits that sweet spot between genuine fear and that festive, spooky excitement we all crave. Man, what a total drag that holiday was.I still can't quite wrap my head around why people are complaining so much about *Trick 'r Treat*. To me, it’s just a classic slasher—*Halloween* is the gold standard for that genre, after all. *Trick 'r Treat* feels more like a horror comedy, almost an omnibus tribute to other great horror films. I guess some people just don't get the vibe, but for me, it works.

I suppose I should clarify what I meant by my previous post... For me, personally, Halloween carries this inherently scary vibe—it’s just how I feel about the holiday—and because of that, I think this movie actually does a better job of capturing the true essence of Halloween. As for *Trick or Treat*, I didn't really view it as a film intended to actually terrify you; more like a bit of a joke or a lighthearted romp. Since I'm not particularly fond of horror comedies—the kind like *drag me to Hell*, for instance—this was actually a decent way to kill some time. It was fun enough, I guess, but I wasn't exactly blown away by it since it doesn't quite hit those specific horror notes I usually look for. I hope that makes more sense! 🙂

Chloe Allen said:I wrote that because I view Halloween as a scary holiday, so to me, the film actually captures The essence of Halloween quite well. I didn't take Trick or Treat as a "scary" movie, but rather as a bit of fun. Since I don't care for horror comedies like, say, drag me to Hell, it was a decent way to pass the time. It was enjoyable, but I wasn't blown away since it doesn't hit the specific horror notes I look for. Hopefully, that clears things up 🙂

To be honest, after watching the flick, I feel a bit bummed that Halloween isn't as big of a deal here in the States with all its customs. The local costume parties in February just don't hit the same way. What really bothers me now is this: almost every online review correctly labeled it as an 80s tribute horror comedy. The people on this forum also clearly stated what kind of movie it was—not some scary, gory horror. And yet, someone still watches a movie when they already know they won't enjoy it 😁

I mean, I actually enjoy watching movies on my own and forming my own conclusions—is there anything wrong with that? 😬 It’s really just a case of a hundred different people having a hundred different tastes... it's pretty obvious you can't make one film that everyone is going to love. 🙂 I never said the movie was bad, far from it... it just feels more like a comedy than an actual horror flick to me, and honestly, I find it kind of funny (which isn't my thing, since comedies are mostly just something I watch to kill time 😬).

But the issue is that it's already been established that you don't like those types of films (horror comedies). Once you state your preference like that, your opinion isn't really objective—is the movie actually bad, or is it just because you dislike the genre? For instance, I don't care for sports video games, but I don't go around talking poorly about them

I was looking for a legit horror movie, not some kid stuff—and yeah, even Freddy Krueger is technically "kid stuff," but at least he has actual value and quality. That’s why he works. This garbage they're hyping up to the heavens? Just... ugh. Not again.

Here is an IMDb review that hit the nail on the head perfectly:

People keep bashing this movie for the wrong reasons. If you're someone reading reviews that say "one of the best horror movies," that doesn't necessarily mean it's scary or gory. This movie is an amazing horror film, but keep in mind that it isn't that scary and nor does it try to be. The reason it's good is , because IT truly captures The essence of Halloween. It's All about being a Kid on Halloween and hearing urban legends , and following Halloween traditions. On top of that, the effects look great. There's no CGI at all, which makes the movie feel much more authentic. The setting also helps; it feels like a real American suburb that just happens to experience some supernatural events on Halloween. The only People Who i could see hating this movie ara tortura porn addicts, and people who didn't grow up celebrating the holiday. For the rest of us who love Halloween, if you enjoy horror films, then make sure to see this movie.

Did I ever actually say the movie was bad? Not at all. I just mentioned that I found it fun, even though I generally prefer straight-up scary horror films. So, within that specific genre (which isn't exactly my favorite, though I think I can still form an objective opinion on a film), I’d say it was a good movie. I wasn't exactly blown away, though—for instance, I had a much better time watching drag me to Hell🙂

To be honest, my previous comment was more about the whole thread, even if I did just quote you :-D. I’m glad the feeling is mutual! By the way, have you checked out Slither and Feast yet?

The whole movie was ruined for me by one massive SPOILER: that entire little subplot involving the werewolf girls 😬

I didn't like it one bit. If they had just cut that out, the film would have been way better 🙂

Not at all. It’s easily one of the best tributes to the 80s. No CGI involved either. I won't spoil too much for you! ;-)
