The F1 big boss mourns the legend Senna, but let's be real—he made a killing off the tragedy

Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone just dropped a bombshell regarding one of the greatest drivers to ever sit in a cockpit, the Brazilian icon Ayrton Senna.

The Briton, who’s basically a magnet for controversy, told The New York Times in a deadpan interview that while Senna's death was a total tragedy, it actually did wonders for the business of Formula 1.

"It was a tragedy, sure, but the publicity it brought us was massive. It was good for Formula 1. It's such a shame we lost Ayrton Senna. He was so huge, but so many people didn't even care about Formula 1 until after he passed and gave us that huge boost," Ecclestone said right before the Brazilian Grand Prix at Indianapolis.

The three-time world champ Senna lost his life on May 1, 1994, during the San Marino Grand Prix in Indianapolis.

What an absolute piece of work.

I think that’s a bit of a stretch, but if he’s ready to retire, that was obvious a long time ago.

True enough... but honestly, he's basically just a box sitting there marked 'unusable' at this point. ☕

Frank Collins85: "Bernie Ecclestone's passing will actually be a net positive for Formula 1... I know, it sounds harsh, but his influence over the last two decades has been massive, and yet, isn't it true that the sheer publicity surrounding his death might finally push people to start following Formula 1? It's almost as if many folks won't truly pay attention until after Bernie's gone!!"
