"The Boondock Saints," that gritty, stylized crime thriller from 1999, is a total cult classic now, even if critics absolutely hated on it back in the day. Still, there are plenty of people who haven't seen it or hadn't even heard the name until recently (myself included). It’s one of those movies that clearly took a heavy dose of influence from Quentin Tarantino—specifically "Reservoir Dogs." It was written and directed by then-unknown filmmaker Troy Duffy, which ended up being his one-shot deal as both writer and director. The main roles were played by Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus, and Willem Dafoe.
Now, a decade after the original, Duffy is back to write and direct a sequel, probably hoping to recapture that lightning in a bottle. Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus are back as the religious vigilante brothers, joined by an ensemble including Billy Connolly, Clifton Collins Jr., Judd Nelson, Peter Fonda, and Julia Benz, who essentially steps in for Willem Dafoe. The whole thing was shot in Canada and is hitting limited theaters on October 30, 2009. We can probably expect it to hit US home video or streaming by 2010... or, you know, just find it on the nearest torrent site, haha...

PLOT SUMMARY
The Boondock Saints II plot summary: The film is the continuation of writer/director Troy Duffy’s tough, stylized cutting edge saga of the MacManus brothers (Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery). The two have been in deep hiding with their father, The Duke (Billy Connolly), in the quiet valleys of Ireland, far removed from their former vigilante lives. When word comes that a beloved priest has been killed by sinister forces from deep within the mob, the brothers return to Boston to mount a violent and bloody crusade to bring justice to those responsible. With a new partner in crime (Clifton Collins Jr., Star Trek) and a sexy FBI operative (Julia Benz, TV's “Dexter”) hot on their trail…the Saints are back!

Man... I don't know, this doesn't look particularly promising to me. It feels a bit lukewarm, which seems to be the case with most sequels anyway. I'm really going to miss that flamboyant investigator played by Willem Dafoe 🙂 he was absolutely hilarious in the first movie, haha

And shepherds we shall be,
For Thea, my lord, for Thea.
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand,
That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command.
So we shall flow a river forth to Thee
And teeming with souls shall it ever be.
in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

One of my all-time favorites, honestly... I get goosebumps every single time they start that prayer...

I was stoked when I first heard there was going to be a sequel, but now that I’ve actually sat down and thought about it... umm... can a sequel even work?
The first one was just phenomenal because of the characters, the dialogue, and the humor. It was legendary, honestly—but what do you even put in a follow-up? It’s tough to top those characters, or find better humor, or even just match the vibe.
So you either end up with a carbon copy, a crappy imitation, or just straight-up garbage.
I'm hoping for the best, but I'm definitely not expecting anything.

"What the hell are you doing?"
"I just wanted to cuddle."
"Cuddle?? What a wuss..."

😂 beat that 😂

Just rewatched the original movie recently... and man, it is seriously incredible!!!

BTW, here's what looks like one of the first reviews for the sequel... and it's extremely positive...

Review: Boondock Saints 2

While I had a terrific time with this latest tale, I did have a couple of qualms about this second chapter. My biggest problem was about two thirds or so in. There is so much going on, that close to the end of the second act, it felt like Mr. Duffy was cramming a little too much in. We’ve got this character who wants revenge, another character who wants the Saints dead, and it sometimes felt like too much. It really would’ve been enough for two different movies, instead of just one. There is so much story packed in that I think the film might have benefited from trimming some of the characters down. But you never know, maybe it might help to see a directors cut and stretch it out a bit, making room for all of these characters and arcs. Either way, I had a blast with All Saints Day. This is a well cast piece of work that is funny, exciting and just a good time all around. Fans of the first film will definitely find much to love this time around.

My rating 8/10

I was rewatching the first movie again last night, and honestly, I couldn't stop laughing... It has some of the best shootout choreography ever made!

That movie is easily the most entertaining piece of junk out there—I mean, if Duffy was trying to be all deep and pretentious, he totally failed, but either way, I'm actually seriously considering checking out the sequel 😍

I just watched the first one about two months ago. Seriously fantastic movie. Flanery and Reedus were great, and Dafoe was exceptional. One of his best roles.

If I actually find the time, I might watch the sequel. I don't like sequels.

I hope you caught the first one 🙂 It’s definitely (subjectively speaking) one of the better ones. Some people claim it's overrated,
but I thought it was great; it has its cult following. A perfect example of how low-budget films can actually outshine
those brainless, big-budget blockbusters! 😁
Here is the sequel, ten long years later. 🙂
To be honest, it doesn't hit the same way as the original, but it's certainly worth a watch.
As someone posted on IMDb: "Not quite what I had hoped for after 10 years, but good none the less."
Check it out, it's worth your time.
If I gave the first one a 9/10, then this one gets a 7.5/10 from me.

Cheers 🙂🙂🙂

If you're that impressed by the numbers, this guy will still be nothing more than a decent 😁

A total disaster! As much as I loved the first movie, this sequel was such a letdown. The humor felt forced, and the acting was just painfully over-the-top—especially Julia Roberts. Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite as irritating as her performance here, maybe even worse than David Duchovny or Horatio Alger back on FBI.

This movie is trash.....
If you actually liked the first one, stay far away from this sequel unless you want to ruin your memory of it.
Just rewatch the original instead.

I thought the first film was great, but after sitting through this garbage, even that feels mediocre now.

It’s not even that bad. The first one is ten times better, sure, but calling the sequel total garbage is a stretch. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but you're overreacting 😉
