World Music & Ethnic Fusion: Discussion Thread

Couldn't find a single thread dedicated to this topic...

So, I'm looking for high-quality ethno bands from around the globe. I won't limit myself strictly to folk, though—recommendations for rock bands that don't sing in English are more than welcome. I suspect there are plenty of groups out there, much like the classic American garage bands, that remain largely undiscovered despite being worth a listen.

To kick things off:

The Chieftains, an ethno-rock outfit from the Czech Republic with cult status. Formed in the late eighties, they have quite a discography, but their standout work is the album "Parade." It was a collaboration with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and produced by Jaz Coleman from Killing Joke (you could say 😁).
Coleman clearly put in the work; he created what can only be described as a masterpiece.

At the Grammy Awards, The Chieftains took home three "Angels" in 2001, winning for Best Band, Best Album (Parade), and the title track.

The guy is a total phenomenon, but you won't find much of him on YouTube. You can actually snag all his albums for free on Napster, though you'll have to deal with the whole registration thing first.

If we’re being strictly technical, German multi-instrumentalist Stephan Micus might not fit perfectly into the typical "world music" bucket—the way a group like Tinariwen does—but he definitely falls under that "ethnic" umbrella. Ever since back in 1976 (don't let the date scare you off!), he has been crafting this incredibly rich, deep, and mystical music. It sits right at that intersection of world music, new age, and acoustic jazz. It’s certainly not the kind of stuff you'd put on to dance to, but honestly, it is just excellent. He has recorded for the legendary German label ECM Records, including some work under the Japo imprint.
Here are some recommendations to check out on YouTube: the albums "Implosions", "Till The End of Time", "Wings Over Water", and "Listen to The Rain"...
Just a little heads-up: at first glance, this sounds like perfect background music, but... you might actually find yourself really liking it.
