this forum isn't some playground for endless bickering and cheap shots

That quote is just part of some moderator's explanation for banning a user. It’s not entirely irrelevant—I’ve disagreed with the banned individual plenty of times, mind you—but I don't write here to act as their defense attorney or play the sycophant.

The whole statement forces a rather blunt question: what is the actual purpose of this forum?

Essentially, all that "bickering and cheap shots" erupted within a thread that was a total disaster from the start—one that probably should have been shut down ages ago for the sake of the American online community's sanity, given its ecological and humanitarian implications. So, I’m sitting here wondering—in good faith, of course—if the topic itself is such an absolute tragedy, such a fundamental horror, then what point is there in any kind of moderation at all? Was that "bickering" perhaps the only shred of life left—a tiny breath of air in a corpse of a thread that could have been summarized in three simple sentences?

To me, any form of online communication—including a forum—has always made sense as just that: communication. If entertainment happens to be a byproduct (as the moderator seems to suggest), it’s like a set of steak knives being tossed in as a bonus with a miracle hair-growth tonic. But now, apparently, the forum serves some other, higher purpose. Is there a manual somewhere explaining what that supposed purpose actually is?

And now you're expecting me to sit here and spell out the difference between actual communication and just bickering, or between a real discussion and mere provocation, or even between a decent debate and mindless off-topic rambling?
I honestly think you know exactly what’s going on here—or at least, I’m certainly hoping you do.

I mean, I assume you already know exactly what’s going on here—or at least, I’d like to think you do.

To even call something "off-topic," there actually needs to be a topic to begin with. That... "thing"... was definitely not a topic. Honestly, it should have been euthanized immediately or just let fade into nothingness—anything to get it out of this void of nothingness.

A real "discussion" would be something happening within a meaningful, interesting, or perhaps even witty thread.

In American football, they often talk about how a referee needs a "feel for the game." You want the official who understands the flow, not some robot just blindly following the rulebook without any intuition.

Look, you’ve got every right to have an opinion on just about anything, and you have the absolute freedom to decide whether you want to weigh in on a topic or just sit this one out entirely.
But if you actually choose to post, you’re implicitly agreeing to follow the rules of the forum and its sub-sections, which means there’s zero excuse for turning things into a chaotic chat room, getting into petty bickering, or engaging in those thinly veiled insults that people love to hide behind...
I honestly can’t wrap my head around where you get the idea that if a thread is deemed "low quality," it somehow gives someone a free pass to ditch basic manners, act like they own the place, or just turn the whole thing into a mindless chat session.
If a thread starts heading down that path, either the mods need to shut it down, or it’ll just die a natural death because nobody will bother to engage with it anymore.

Exactly. You didn't actually close the thread—you just issued this incredibly misguided "guideline" suggesting we shouldn't focus on the OP, even though, quite frankly, the entire post was basically a monologue about himself. Even someone as pedantic as I am—and believe me, I can be quite particular—could have pointed out several instances where you were doing exactly what you're now preaching against.

But honestly, that’s a rabbit hole I have no interest in diving down: it leaves us staring at that grand, lofty "Purpose" that this forum supposedly serves.

I mean, honestly, what’s even the big deal here?
First off, don't go thinking you get to decide if this thread gets locked or not; that’s up to the sub moderators, not just me, so let's get that straight right out of the gate.
The OP laid out a specific situation and the headache that came with it, but they didn't exactly submit a formal request for us all to sit around and perform some deep psychological analysis on their life.
That was my point too—just leave the guy alone and let the conversation actually focus on the topic and the actual issue at hand.
I genuinely don't see which part of that is giving anyone such a hard time to wrap their heads around.

The way you keep pushing this question makes it sound like someone walking into a local pub and claiming they should be allowed to spit on the floor and throw punches just because they came there to relax and have a good time.
Well, newsflash: those who tried to test those boundaries quickly found out that's not how it works.
😉
