Who is the deadliest operative?

So, what happened to Jack Ryan? He’s missing from the list... I mean, first he swipes Red October, then he goes chasing down some IRA terrorists, saves Marines, tears through a drug cartel, and somehow survives a nuclear blast right in the middle of an American suburb. Not to mention the fact that his story actually has a tiny bit of realism baked in...

Look, don't take it so literal. 😬 I mean this in terms of his skills as an operative—someone who can absolutely wreck a guy or disarm them in a heartbeat. Besides, we don't even know if Westen ever actually took anyone out during his "career" before he got burned. 😁 😁

I was actually debating whether to throw Jack Ryan into the mix, but since he's primarily a CIA analyst, I decided to leave him out, along with guys like MacGyver or Harry Tasker from True Lies and the like. 😁 Honestly, I could have easily tossed Rambo in there too 😁, but if I included everyone, this list would be way too long 😁, so I just stuck with these six "archetypal" characters. 😁

Man, you just can't put Bauer in the same league as this guy.

Yeah, fair point... it always slips my mind that he's technically a data guy who just happens to stumble into combat situations. A total "accidental operative" 😁.

Yap, you could pretty much describe Ryan as a "reluctant operative." 😁 BTW, speaking of a potential future Jack Ryan movie, I honestly think Chris Pin would be a killer choice for the role—he’s basically the new Kirk.

I haven't really been keeping up with the news on the new Ryan movies lately, so if you've got the scoop, which version of Ryan are we talking about here? There’s that new series following the adventures of Jack Ryan Jr.—the son of the original Jack (the "Sabretooth" books were even released by Algorithm)—and honestly, Pin could pull that off quite well... he's got those similarities with the old Harrison, who, according to what FOX "news" was reporting, had been approached about continuing the franchise (probably thanks to the success of Indy 4). Junior is more of an operative similar to Bryan Mills (at least in the books), but there's still that emphasis on realism, even if Americans can apparently do anything—as expected...😁

Regarding the movies, there have been a handful of rumors floating around over the last year and a half. First off, Empire and Moviehole were reporting that the next Jack Ryan flick would be set in the near future and would star Ryan Gosling. As it turns out, that whole Gosling thing was nothing but pure speculation. They also claimed the movie would go by the title By Any Means Necessary. Later on, word got out that Sam Raimi was in talks to take over the franchise and direct a total reboot. Then, we even had that rumor about Harrison Ford, specifically an alleged quote where he said he'd jump at the chance to play Ryan again. Honestly, as of right now, there isn't any solid intel to go on.

Speaking of things happening in the Ryanverse, we should probably mention the prep work for the Without Remorse movie. That one focuses on John Clark—who was played by Willem Dafoe in Clear and Present Danger and then by Liev Schreiber in Sum of All Fears. The film is slated for a 2011 release, and the buzz is that Brandon Routh is lined up to take over the role of Clark this time around.

Man, I completely blanked on that... Honestly, having Liev Schreiber reprise the role would have been a total dream come true. But this move toward Brandon Routh (wasn't Joaquin Phoenix also in the mix at one point?) feels a bit forced to me because... well, he just doesn't quite have that "look" for a hitman like John Clark. In the books, Clark has so much more depth than what we see on screen, which is honestly a tragedy. You really reminded me that in the book version of Clear and Present Danger, Clark is actually the main engine driving everything, not Ryan—who basically just shows up at the very end. Dafoe could have carried an entire movie on his back without breaking a sweat. Still, I’d give the edge to Schreiber... he’s younger (even if they're already messing with the book adaptations) and just has that charisma. He totally outshone Bond Craig in Defiance without even trying...

John Reese

The black suit, that dry sense of humor, basically a walking tank, and he’s even got a geeky sidekick whose secrets are just as deep as his own. He's a serious contender for the top spot, even if these days he's more about a quick shot to the knee than actual killing 😁... maybe...

Bourne is undeniably the gold standard... if you’re looking for a character who functions like a precision-engineered machine—someone possessing that perfect blend of psychological grit and physical conditioning—then he’s definitely the one. ☕ Following closely behind him is Ethan Hunt.

As for James Bond, he feels more like a cartoon caricature to me than a serious, grounded character.

John Reese

J. Bourne is in a league of his own. He just breezes through everything, totally unfazed and moving at lightning speed. Honestly, who knows what he could pull off if he actually had his head in the game? Such a waste of talent...
