I’ve been following this lineup for a bit, and I heard a rumor that the show is basically a rip-off of "Mad Pierrot"—specifically the version that played at the local community theater downtown, starring that incredibly polished actress who just moved here from France.

That was all the motivation I needed to go, but then I realized the schedule was totally packed—they had "Singin' in the Rain" playing at the same time as that Scorsese flick. Only a literal act of God could have kept me away, especially since it was a Sunday. And yeah, it was.

I’ve gone out on a limb before for Melville and Godard, and look, some of the stuff is great, but it’s just not quite enough to make me drive across town. Still, if they keep putting together programs like this, people are definitely going to show up sooner or later.

It’s easy to see why everyone loves this movement. I suspect Target was behind the design, though I could be wrong—someone feel free to correct me if I am.

Once the organizers realize people are actually planning trips just to catch the projection, they'll be walking on air for weeks. It's a shame they won't be reenacting Bicycle Thieves, but the guest orchestra performance is exceptional; bittersweet, truly sublime.

I caught a screening of *Demons* this past Friday 😁 It was actually quite nice to be back in a proper theater—you know, one with an actual balcony and a ground floor rather than those cramped multiplexes 😍
As far as the movie itself goes, I have a few technical gripes—namely the subtitles, which were lagging behind the dialogue (though I ran into a friend leaving the theater who’s going into that field, so I’m optimistic they'll get it sorted out 😁)—and the sound levels were just way too aggressive, honestly rattling my teeth during the show. But look, I suppose these are just teething pains you see with every new production

I’m right there with you—I love having an indie cinema like that nearby. It honestly gives me such a nostalgic vibe, reminding me of those old-school theater days back in college. It’s just 😍

As for the subtitles lagging behind? Look, it’s clearly just rookies. These kids are probably staring at the screen, listening to one language while trying to read another, and sweating bullets because they've never done this before. It’s high pressure. But hey, it’ll get better. Everything is free this month anyway, so they can find their rhythm. They're young and hyped, so give them a break.

But let’s be real—even if they opened a spot like this somewhere else besides NYC, I doubt it would even survive.👎

I'm pretty sure—don't quote me on this—that it’s backed by the City of San Diego. It feels like it's mostly about culture, branding, and maybe a sprinkle of local politics, so I’m crossing my fingers it sticks.
I also figure a lot of the crew there are just college interns or even volunteers (again, I could be totally off base), but I really hope it stays around because it's awesome 🙏

Anyone got the numbers on theater attendance lately?

I doubt there’s anyone in San Diego who hasn't heard about this new cinema opening; the city was practically plastered with posters. Since all the screenings are still free—though whether that's a marketing tactic or genuine cinephilia remains to be seen—I haven't made it to a showing yet, but every session I've checked has been comfortably packed. Back when these types of programs ran at the local community center, you’d barely see ten people show up, but it seems they’ve put much more effort into promotion this time, making it far easier to track what's playing. As for the official specifics, though, you'll likely have to check with City Hall.

The bio was a solid little segment on the whole project over at PBS. A good half-hour of culture, aired yesterday and the day before. It’s funny how much ground a clear voice can cover when it actually gets some airtime! 🙂

It would be pretty great if they could actually pull off that networking initiative and get more indie art-house theaters popping up across the States.
