Does a patient actually have any right to demand a referral for a specialist visit, even when their primary care doctor keeps flat-out refusing to write one?

My boyfriend is dealing with some serious stomach pain—some kind of gastritis, or God forbid, an ulcer. It’s been rough because he dealt with a nasty bout of gastroenteritis last year, and ever since then, his stomach has just been a total mess. But this doctor? She won't budge on sending him to a specialist; she just keeps preaching about drinking tea and eating dry toast like that's going to fix everything.🙄

There definitely is. You could try taking a slightly more aggressive approach, or if you’re really hitting a wall, just head straight to the ER and you can get a referral from a doctor at UPS.

Thanks, but honestly, I’m telling him I’d swear at her top to her face if it meant we could just get this over with right now

Between the stomach issues, the early signs of arthritis kicking in down his knee, and needing to see a urologist... it's a mess. And his wife won't let him go. I mean, he hasn't really seen a doctor in years, not even for anything major—it's just not his thing. He doesn't care about taking sick days or whatever, he just wants the pain to stop bothering him once and for all

The boss's wife is at it again 😉
😬A few whispered conversations can really stir up a storm

At the end of the day, he isn't exactly the only GP in town
She should just look for a decent doctor and move her practice elsewhere

So now he’s finally gonna move after dragging his feet for an entire year—I literally told him, "If you don't move by then, you might as well kick the bucket,"
I mean, I don't know, maybe he just doesn't give a damn... it's all about his dignity and whatever else
He says he's going through with the move, but honestly, I have zero clue what the actual paperwork or procedure looks like
Part of me just wants to grab him by the hand, drag him straight to the doctor, and then just absolutely lose it on her

First, you’ll want to track down a new doctor and see if they're actually taking on new patients. Honestly, some of them are so backed up they won't even look at you,
so it's worth a few calls first! Once you find someone, you just have to let your current doctor know you're moving on so they can hand over your medical records and the official discharge forms.
After that, you take everything to the new clinic. Once they sign off, they'll handle the paperwork with Medicare.
In my experience, some doctors will even take care of the whole Medicare update process for you themselves!

It makes me so angry to hear about this kind of negligence. I know it’s tough, but you have to demand answers and fight for yourself. No one else is going to do it for you. I went through something similar once. Luckily, it wasn't anything serious, but after a year of looking back, I'm definitely switching doctors...😁
