Hey
I've been dealing with Type 1 diabetes for over a decade now—and lately, this weird itching started up in my right heel. It feels deep, almost like there are tiny needles or thorns inside the heel itself. I'll scratch at it or just stomp my foot on the floor to get some relief, but it only works for a second.
It mostly hits me in the evening, especially when I'm trying to wind down for bed. Sometimes it gets so intense I literally can't sleep... it’s driving me insane...
I'm super careful about hygiene and my blood sugar levels are always dialed in, so this whole thing just came out of nowhere...
Also, it happens in that same right leg—these strange, tingling sensations shoot all the way up my leg. It gets to the point where I have to stretch my muscles and lift my foot just to cope, kind of like those sudden cramps you get when you're swimming at the beach. It comes in waves, over and over... it's driving me nuts, too, especially at night when I'm trying to sleep.
I did some digging on Google and it turns out a ton of people deal with this exact same thing—plenty of them don't even have diabetes but have the same symptoms. So, I'm thinking it might not even be the diabetes; apparently, it's more of a nerve issue...
If anyone here has dealt with anything similar, please let me know what happened—I'm honestly at my wit's end...

thanks

It seems highly probable that these symptoms mark the onset of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. I would suggest consulting your endocrinologist to discuss potential adjustments to your treatment plan, such as intensifying your current regimen or adding specific medications to help slow the progression of these complications. Best of luck...

It’s true, peripheral neuropathy seems like the most likely culprit here, but honestly, if you’re also getting that tingling sensation down in your calves, we might be looking at sciatica instead. It wouldn't hurt to double-check everything with some basic labs, or, if you're feeling up to it, maybe go see a neurologist just to be safe and get a definitive answer.

There is also the possibility of diabetic macroangiopathy, which can present in various ways. Are you experiencing those specific symptoms, or anything similar, while walking? If so, roughly how many yards or feet can you go before they start...

Can someone break down these medical terms for me? I'm a bit out of my depth here...
I don't really get those same issues while walking—it's more like once I finally settle down, I get this sensation like an electric shock running down my whole leg straight into my foot, and I have to shift it just to make it stop. No tingling in the calves for me, though...
I've got a hospital stay lined up at Mayo Clinic in June of next year, so they'll probably run those neurological tests then too.

Prolonged periods of high blood glucose levels can cause damage to the blood vessels, affecting both the smaller microvascular structures and the larger ones

My American Diabetes Association number is 6.2
Like I said before—my blood sugar is totally fine—so there aren't any long-term spikes or anything...
