Can someone please explain the ending of this movie to me? I didn't quite wrap my head around it. Specifically, that part where he walks on water and they claim life is just an illusion...😕

I think you nailed it perfectly.

I’m guessing that’s an allusion to Christ's walking on water. It's basically saying poor Chance was so out of this world—one of those "blessed are the meek" types—that surreal stuff like this actually happens to him.

Honestly, I’m in a pretty pathetic spot right now where TV is basically my only entertainment, and most of it is garbage. Every once in a while, though, you stumble onto something actually worth watching, like this movie.
The whole thing is a parody of the American landscape back in the 70s and 80s—basically a jab at a modern society where TV is the main (or only) source of info. TV is just a one-way street. There's this part where the lead, Chance, realizes more people are watching him tonight than have sat in a theater in the last 40 years. It paints this picture of a society where nobody reads books, nobody hits up the theater, nobody picks up a newspaper... Even if you have the remote and think you have the power to switch channels, the next one is just more of the same. It makes you wonder: do you even have a choice? Can anyone actually influence the quality of what's being pumped out?
It’s way too easy to just turn your brain off and let the tube think for you. If you want to see how dangerous mass media can get, just look back at the 1930s in Nazi Germany, when they’d constantly air films portraying Jews as rats. Behind that kind of propaganda, there’s always a mastermind like Goebbels who knows exactly what he’s doing (probably justifying it to himself as being "for the good of the nation" or whatever). Goebbels used that rat archetype—like they were carriers of disease—to bake that image into the collective consciousness, triggering all that fear and hatred toward Jews.

Back when the book was written and the movie was made, you had those revolutionary Beat Generation ideas hitting hard, attacking the conformist, suburban American lifestyle—people living in cookie-cutter houses in the suburbs, with the same furniture, watching the same shows, thinking the same thoughts, all chasing that American Dream...
In the movie, pulling the strings in the background is this bloodless, anemic old guy acting from the shadows, advising the President and running massive corporations. Then you’ve got Chance, this lovable idiot whose entire world is just TV and gardening. He watches everything without any critical thought—which is something any intelligent person needs when taking in info. He doesn't understand choice, or right versus wrong; he just mimics whatever behavior he sees on screen. Once he finally steps out into the real world—into a society built on such numbing media—he blends in perfectly because he's so unremarkable. His simple metaphors about life and growing plants actually hit home with people because he isn't lying; he doesn't use words to protect himself or mask the truth like everyone else does. But he isn't doing it because he's some saint; he's doing it because he literally doesn't know any other way to be. That's the parody of it all.
In a society like that, it’s no surprise that a guy as dim as Chance comes across as brilliant—someone who could actually be President.
If he can be President, I guess he can walk on water, too. This kind of society is always looking for a messiah...

If you're just blindly soaking up everything on the screen, you'll probably believe Chance can walk on water. It all just depends on your headspace...
