So, my brother and I ended up with $400. If I give him $167, I’m left with $233. Now, the question is: did I actually shortchanged him by $33 or by $67? Because if we had split everything perfectly down the middle, we both would have walked away with 600. As it stands, he’s missing 100, but I’ve got an extra 200 in my pocket. So, is the actual loss 100 or 200?

In my head, I’m thinking I basically cheated him out of $33, even though I'm sitting here with an extra 200 to spend.

The situation itself is pretty straightforward, honestly, but I'm struggling with how to actually put it into words.

You aren't "up" by 200; you are up by 100, given that you should have had 600 but now have 700—just as he is down by 100. He was supposed to have 600, but he only has 500, correct?
How do you express it? It is simple: based on the 600 baseline, one person is +100 and the other is -100.

It’s kind of weird, man... how a thermos just seems to know when it’s summer versus when it’s winter.

It doesn't really matter how you phrase it—what actually counts is that you sit down with those $67 guys and have an honest drink. That way, nobody ends up angry because everyone gets their fair share, and you? You'll just be drunk.
