My mom is going through menopause right now (she's 52). Her OB-GYN told her that her uterine lining is thickened—measuring at 8.2 mm—and said it looks pretty suspicious. She just had an endometrial biopsy done and they sent the sample off for testing. Now we’re stuck waiting a week for the results, and honestly, we are all losing our minds with anxiety 🙂... My mom hasn't had a period in almost two years, and I read somewhere that the main symptom of uterine cancer is bleeding, which she isn't experiencing. I think I'm just trying to comfort myself, but the truth is I am absolutely terrified. Has anyone else dealt with something similar? In my head, it makes sense that women in menopause might have a thicker lining since they aren't having periods and there's no shedding 🤷, but I'm definitely not an expert here... Clearly, this thickening shouldn't be happening 😕... What else could cause this? I just really hope it isn't anything malignant 🙂 🙂

I personally deal with a thickened uterine lining, and apparently, it affects about 20% of women; in the US, it usually shows up through really heavy periods. I had surgery for endometriosis three years ago, and before that, I had been poked and prodded by several different gynecologists, yet not one of them ever mentioned it until I went to a private clinic recently for a Pap smear. So, it’s entirely possible your mom has had this her whole life and nobody ever flagged it.
If it turns out to be something bad—God forbid, though I really don't think it will—it'll likely be caught in time and dealt with. I know the waiting game is the absolute worst part, but try to hang in there and stay positive. Don't let the fact that they sent it for testing scare you too much. I had a benign cyst, and they sent the tissue for pathology after my surgery too. You can never say with 100% certainty whether something is malignant or benign until those lab results come back.

Are we talking about the same thing when people mention a thickened uterus, a thickened endometrial lining, or a thickened uterine wall? I've been trying to wrap my head around whether these terms are just different ways of describing the exact same clinical finding or if there’s a subtle distinction between them.
