Alcohol 120%

I'm looking for some guidance here... I managed to download a movie in .avi format, and all I want to do is burn it onto a disc so I can watch it on my DVD player—assuming the player actually supports DivX. The problem is, Alcohol 120% isn't even recognizing the .avi file. Is it even technically possible to burn DivX content using this specific software?

For tasks like this, you should be using Nero or some free alternative like Nero Burning ROM.

Exactly my point. It’s an .avi file, so all I really need to do is burn it onto a disc so I can actually watch it on my DVD player back home....

I don't get why people drown their sorrows in Alcohol 120 when they have the good old, ever-present Nero at their disposal.

That's because Alcohol has way better support for image files than Nero does. Personally, I use both—Nero for burning discs and Alcohol for handling the images.

Even Alcohol doesn't support every single image format 😁
In those cases, ImgBurn comes in handy.

Honestly, I haven't run into anyone who hasn't tried to fry the damn thing yet, though I guess it might be doable if you're lucky enough.

Just grab the PowerISO, unpack it onto your hard drive, and burn it like normal. I don't see why everyone's making such a big deal out of this.🤷

Alcohol is designed for image files (ISO, BIN, etc.). With Alcohol, you can mount them using the virtual drive it provides. For instance, if your image file is 8 GB, you won't be able to fit that on a standard single-layer DVD using a basic burner; you'd need a dual-layer DVD and a compatible burner. A dual-layer DVD usually runs about 20 to $17, depending on the quality you're looking for.

Since your file is in .avi format, you should use Nero 6, 7, or 8 instead. Basically, you just open Nero, select the file you want to burn, and hit "burn"—I'm keeping the instructions simple, though I can't be sure how familiar you are with navigating Nero's interface.

By the way, just because you successfully burn the file to a disc doesn't guarantee your DVD player will actually play it. The codecs might be different. Personally, I have two movies that won't run on my specific DVD/DivX player, yet they work perfectly fine on others, and vice versa. But that’s a whole different conversation entirely.
