Hey everyone, I’ve got a quick question for you all!

So, I’m running an EVGA GTX 275 SUPERCLOCKED with 1792 MB of GDDR3. It’s about 6 years old now, but honestly, it still handles Grand Theft Auto V on high settings without breaking a sweat (even without any overclocking)—it's a total beast for its age! Here’s my dilemma: I was browsing eBay, and I can't find anything exactly like mine. All the other GTX 275 cards listed seem to be the 900 MB versions or something similar. What I'm wondering is, if I pick up two of those 900 MB cards to run in SLI, will I somehow lose the extra memory from my EVGA card if I set it as the primary? I hope you guys follow what I'm getting at here... Also, is it even possible to mix and match cards like this, say pairing them with a GTX 560 or a 760?

If you pair an 896MB card with a 1792MB one, you're really only getting the 896MB capacity.

You can't mix and match different graphics cards. I think that kind of thing—like trying to combine AMD and Nvidia—has only started showing up in the most recent generations.

Oh, I totally get what you mean about mixing AMD and Nvidia, but that wasn't actually what I was digging into! I’m honestly just floored by how this EVGA card is performing with my i7 4770. Even though it's running on GDDR3, it is absolutely crushing every single game I throw at it! It feels like a total underdog story. Look, I've spent plenty of time building PCs over the years, but I've never actually messed around with SLI or CrossFire setups, so I don't know the ins and outs of it all—that's why I'm asking! 😁 Otherwise, I'll be stuck scouring eBay trying to hunt down an identical match before they're all gone for $200 😁 thanks a million!!

Man, just stay away from SLI, especially with older cards. Honestly, even on newer setups, it never really works the way it’s supposed to anyway...

The issue with this card isn't just raw power; it's the DX10 limitations. Investing in an SLI setup like this feels like throwing money down the drain. Honestly? You're better off selling what you've got and picking up some decent used gear for $800-$333. It’ll actually last you way longer than this SLI nonsense. 🍿

- They lack DX11 support
- The VRAM is pretty stingy by modern standards
- You'd be looking at some serious overheating issues
- Microstuttering is a massive headache when running CrossFire/SLI
- My understanding is that pairing two Nvidia cards with mismatched VRAM just won't work, but don't quote me on that 🤷

Nvidia states:
"Can I mix and match graphics cards with different sizes of memory?

When purchasing a second graphics card, you should try to match the memory size so that you are ensured full value and performance from your purchase. However, while it is not recommended, Nvidia does offer The flexibility to run graphics cards with different sized Memory by using CoolBits. Using CoolBits (value set to 18), you can force both of the cards to use the lower of the two memory sizes and operate them together in SLI mode. When dissimilar memory sizes are enabled to work together using CoolBits, the effective memory size for each card becomes the smaller of the memory sizes."

*But since this FAQ isn't in the official SLI documentation anymore, did they actually patch this in the drivers? Or is Using CoolBits still a necessity?

From what I can see, you've got a solid processor under the hood—honestly, you could drop just about any modern single graphics card in there and your CPU wouldn't even break a sweat. My advice, which I think some of the other folks here have already mentioned, is that it's much better to go for one "beast" of a card rather than trying to juggle two weaker, older ones. Between the higher power draw and the fact that SLI/CrossFire support in modern games is pretty hit-or-miss these days... it's just not worth the headache.

I totally get where you guys are coming from... anyway, I decided to treat myself $633 today and headed out to pick up a brand new Sapphire Toxic R9 280 x 3GB Tri-X graphics card! I’m really crossing my fingers that I made the right call here—what do you all think?

Just getting started with the unboxing process right now... -,-"

Hey, where'd you pick up the new one? If you actually got it at that price, you scored big time—definitely didn't get ripped off.

Lol. Bumbleebeejev brother? 😁🙏

Yeah, let's be real: unless you're chasing some insane, ultra-high resolutions or frame rates that defy logic, setting up SLI or CrossFire just isn't worth the headache. I say this as someone who proudly maintains an SLI rig and has personally endured every single frustration imaginable that comes with it.
- You end up with a flimsy, low-quality SLI cable, and if it isn't seated perfectly, your entire screen starts flickering with these obnoxious green, blue, or red artifacts.
- Half the games out there don't even bother utilizing SLI for peak performance, so you basically just let one card do all the heavy lifting anyway.
- You have to manually toggle SLI every single time you sit down to play—since I keep my cards in adaptive performance mode to ensure they stay silent and power-efficient during daily tasks—and then, of course, you have to remember to switch it back when you're done.
- And if a game doesn't natively support SLI, you can try to force it through, but will it actually work? Usually, it's a coin toss with very little success.

Oh, totally! That was my exact thought the first time I laid eyes on the Sapphire Toxic series (the R9 2 XX series).

So, would it be worth it? Like, should I take that extra $2--$1.00 and dump it into a higher-end Full HD monitor like this:

1.

Or maybe go big and spend $3--$1.25 on a 4K monitor such as:

2.

3.

Gaming at 4K resolution is an incredibly expensive hobby, isn't it? Of course, that doesn't mean you can't just dial back the resolution and keep playing, but I'll admit I'm not exactly an expert when it comes to various upscaling techniques or how a 1080p image actually translates onto a massive 4K panel. Perhaps someone here has more experience with the nuances of that transition, but I remember on older 1080p monitors, if your GPU was struggling and you dropped the resolution, everything would end up looking washed out and blurry because of the upscaling. As for whether it's worth it from a purely financial standpoint? Absolutely not. But for the pure soul of the experience... maybe 😁

Aha! That's the word I was hunting for! For the sake of my soul, I want to be able to jump onto YouTube, watch a movie, or dive into a video clip and see every single tiny detail in the highest resolution possible. For actual gaming, though? Personally, 1080p at 120fps hits the sweet spot perfectly for me. My trusty philipsov 234E5—which was an absolute beast for gaming—finally kicked the bucket on me. So now, I'm on the hunt for a new victim... something realistic that'll actually last 😁

Honestly, getting a Quad HD setup makes way more sense if you actually want to push some games.

Look, you asked if you should invest in a new Full HD setup or go 4K... Quad HD is right in the middle and actually makes sense for an R9 2 XX (sort of—4K is definitely out of the question)

I'm pretty familiar with the usual suspects like HD (720p), Full HD (1080p), 2K (1440p), and obviously 4K... but I have to admit, "Quad HD" is a totally new term to me!

+1

Something like this

jadebison17, what you linked isn't really anything special. That one unit is way too overpriced for just 1080p and a 24" screen (regardless of the refresh rate), and those 4K options are just cheap junk. In my opinion, a 28" screen is far too small for 4K resolution, yet simultaneously total overkill for gaming.

It's called "quad" because it packs four times the pixels of standard HD (720p). People throw that term around for mobile devices all the time—it actually makes sense, basically literal

QHD is a much more realistic goal. Like everyone else said, 4K is an expensive hobby.

Honestly, you could've just Googled it.

I did a bit of digging on Google but couldn't find much, which is why I figured I'd just ask you guys here..

So, what kind of monitor would you all suggest for me? My main thing is that I really want at least Full HD resolution, but more importantly, I need those colors to absolutely pop! I want something super vibrant...

Wait, I just realized my mistake while looking back at the question—I actually picked this up at e-Digital, and I totally messed up the model. It isn't a Toxic card; the Toxic ones are blue... -,-" This is all the info I have, but it definitely isn't a Toxic version😁
