Okay, so on my second-to-last blood test, my iron levels were at 33—and apparently, the upper limit is 30. Honestly, nobody was making a big deal out of it, and neither was I. But now? My latest results show I'm sitting at 40! Now I'm just waiting on the ferritin numbers to come back (if I’m remembering that correctly). Is it even possible that this is linked to the birth control pills I'm on? I've always struggled with low iron levels; I actually used to be officially anemic back in the day.

And there's one more thing. My alkaline phosphatase came back at 49, but the lower limit is supposed to be 64. My doctor just gave my mom this passing comment about how I need to start exercising because my bones are "weak." Like, excuse me? Can someone please explain what that's even supposed to mean?

Also, what are the actual odds of me having something like hemochromatosis? How common is that condition, really?

Thanks 🙂

So, I’ve got high iron levels too—the upper limit is supposed to be 30, but my reading came back at 49.8, and on top of that, I'm taking birth control pills.
This is actually the second time in a row I've seen these elevated numbers on my lab results.
Now I'm really starting to wonder, what could possibly be driving my iron levels this high, and more importantly, what kind of things should I be avoiding to get this under control?

Ugh... why did I even just read that? Now I’m spiraling. 😬
The thing is, I’ve been on birth control for quite a while now—with the occasional break here and there. A few months back, I had some bloodwork done, and my iron levels came back at 36. That was actually the first time in years it’s dipped that low; usually, it stays well within the normal range 👍.

And just like you, Lisa Barrett22, nobody really said anything about it, so I just brushed it off. But now that I’m reading this—especially after a little late-night Google rabbit hole... 😱
I can't help but feel a bit anxious—is it a bit much to jump straight to a scary diagnosis based on a hunch? If this is actually being triggered by the pill, then hopefully it’s a much easier fix. Or am I just wishful thinking? 🙂

So, I’ve been through something pretty similar. I’ve been on birth control for ages, and when I went in for bloodwork just over six months ago, my iron levels were sitting at 38.
My doctor told me it wasn't a huge deal—basically said it fluctuates depending on your body, what you ate, or even how much coffee you had right before the lab work—so I wasn't really sweating it. She didn't even mention anything about it being linked to the pill 🤔

But then, I went back for another checkup last month and my iron is totally fine now. I can't remember the exact number, but I think it was actually under 20. So honestly? Don't stress too much. These things are usually just temporary blips in the results. 🙂

I had the exact same issue with birth control pills. My nephews kept telling me it was just "normal," though I guess they weren't really experts. I don't use them anymore because of other side effects—mostly swelling in my legs and some concerns about blood clots. Plus, my iron levels were through the roof 😬
