Guys, I’ve been struggling with this for four years now. I’ve got a beer belly and a chest that’s seen better days, and my buddies keep telling me I’ve let myself go. I really need some advice on how to drop 10 pounds.

P.S. Don't even start with the diet talk. I barely eat anything, and I'm not exactly an athlete. Just tell me what kind of exercises will actually work. 🙂

Forty-five minutes on the bike, three times a week.
It’s a decent enough workout, though, so you actually feel it. You'll be sweating through your shirt in about 12 miles

I suppose I could tell you how I do it, though it probably isn't the healthiest approach, if we're being honest. Eating just once a day and heading out for a run in the evening seems to work for me, mostly because I tend to sleep in late and can grab my meal around 1:00 or 2:00 PM, which carries me through the rest of the day; however, if you have a job or need to be up early, that might be a bit of a struggle. I guess sticking to things like running or cycling helps, too.

It isn't merely about the quantity of food consumed, but rather the quality... what you eat, how nutritious it is, and how diverse your diet remains. Furthermore, if you drink beer on a daily basis, it would be prudent to have your liver function tested. Impaired liver function can often be the underlying cause behind issues like a "beer belly" or enlarged chest tissue, or perhaps it could even be gynecomastia... it is certainly advisable to completely abstain from alcohol until you have had everything medically evaluated.

You probably already know all this and are just playing coy, but 🧐you really need to get out on your bike every single day! You don't have to tackle a massive mountain trail right away; even just some short local routes will do, as long as you're working hard enough to break a sweat. Also, try eating plenty of small meals—if you're not quite sure how to manage that, just take whatever you'd normally eat and split it into four or five smaller portions. Try not to eat anything right before bed, and maybe swap those processed snacks for some fresh fruit instead.

This routine might feel a bit grueling at first, but eventually, it’ll just become your new normal. Honestly, if I don't get at least thirty minutes of brisk walking in every day, I start feeling incredibly restless and jittery.

I'd wish you luck, but you don't really need it as long as you stick to these solid tips.😘

p.s. That belly fat (visceral fat) is actually the most dangerous kind because it's exactly what leads to heart attacks!

Why is everyone obsessed with the idea that eating before bed is bad news?

Science has actually proven there’s zero correlation there...

I personally eat after midnight every single night and I feel fine—plus, I've actually dropped 14 pounds over the last two months.

@CodeAcademy
Man, you just need to get moving; hit the pavement, go for a ride, jump in a pool, honestly just find something to do for at least an hour a day.
And maybe watch what you're putting in your body (cut out the chips, soda, ice cream, and all that junk)
You can still have a beer, just don't overdo it.
Beer doesn't have fat or cholesterol, but it does trigger hunger later, so maybe just stick to one slice of pizza afterward 😁 (that hasn't backfired on me yet)

Good grief, man... you can find some seriously questionable advice in this corner of the internet if you look hard enough.!

Look, if you actually want some real help with dropping those pounds—and I mean actual results—you’ve gotta start by being brutally honest. Write down everything you’ve eaten or swallowed over the last three days. And I don't mean just the big meals. I mean every single sip of water, every beer, every coffee (or whatever else you're sipping on), and every little snack that passed your lips. Total transparency, that's the only way to see where the damage is happening.

Michael Rivera63 said:I guess everyone’s always harping on about how eating right before bed is a total disaster. I don't know, maybe it's just because people love to hear themselves talk, but apparently, you're supposed to avoid it like the plague.

They’ve actually gone and proven scientifically that there's zero connection there, I guess.

Come on, man. Just drop the link to that study already.

Michael Rivera63 said:I mean, I basically eat something every single night after midnight and honestly, I haven't had any issues with it. I guess I actually dropped like 15 pounds over the last couple of months, so maybe it's not even a thing.

Your situation just goes to show that because of genetics, there isn't some universal rule for gaining weight that applies to everyone. But honestly, that doesn't prove anything when it comes to eating right before bed—that's still probably linked to packing on the pounds, I guess.

Look, man, you should probably start training. Run, bike, swim, whatever—honestly, just pick something and stick to it. Just try to get at least an hour of movement in every day, I guess.
Maybe just watch what you're eating a bit... like, cut out the junk food, soda, ice cream, and all that stuff.
You can grab a beer if you want, I guess, just don't go overboard.
Beer doesn't exactly have fat or cholesterol or anything, I guess, but it'll probably just leave you feeling starving later on, so maybe just try sticking to one slice of pizza after. 😁 It hasn't worked for me yet, I guess.

That's actually pretty solid advice. 👍

What’s your take on jump rope as a workout?
How effective is it really, what is it best suited for, and how much daily volume would be enough?

That article popped up on Yahoo! about two months ago... Yahoo!

I'll see if I can track him down...

In principle, it all comes down to maintaining a negative energy balance over a sustained period. If that deficit is aggressive, you’ll drop weight faster, but you're also putting massive stress on your body and inviting health issues. Rapid weight loss is a trap because it doesn't actually change your habits. That’s exactly why most diets fail.

As for the whole liver thing, it misses the mark. Liver disease is more often a consequence of obesity rather than its primary cause. If we view obesity itself as the underlying condition, then the root causes are frequently things like hormonal imbalances, diabetes, and so on.

Physical activity is non-negotiable, as is cutting out specific foods. You need to ditch the fats, scale back the carbs—don't cut them entirely, the body needs them—and stay away from soda. Even alcohol should be limited, since those drinks are essentially liquid calories.

The worst mistake you can make is trying to cut everything out at once. Instead, just eliminate the junk, slightly reduce your portion sizes, eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day, and make sure you're moving daily. If you only manage a couple of times a week, you better make sure those sessions are intense.

Works for me since I sleep in late and eat around 1 or 2 PM, so I can last all day. But if you have a job or get up early, that'll be a struggle. Basically, just running, biking, whatever...

That "eat once a day" thing—are you trying to help someone or kill them???!! Watch out for the massive rebound effect—the fewer times you eat, the more your body tries to store fat because it’s "scared" about when the next meal is coming. It overcompensates every single time. It's that classic Yo-Yo effect everyone knows about.

Sorry for the tone, but there's so much conflicting advice on here that you can't see the forest for the trees. Regarding food—try basing it on slow carbs, like oatmeal, for breakfast. During the day, stick to protein (chicken breast, cottage cheese, tuna...) paired with fibrous veggies or greens. Eat at least 5 times a day to start, but don't stuff yourself. As for working out—you don't have to kill yourself on a bike or running. Just listen to your body and know when enough is enough. To start, pick any aerobic activity and keep your heart rate between 120-140 bpm for about 30 minutes. Nothing more, nothing harder.

Anyway, hope that gives you some direction—ask if I missed anything...

It’s a solid move... burns a ton of calories. Try doing like 10 minutes every day, probably around 200 kcal... or just do two sets of 150 jumps until you're satisfied...

Just so you know, there's no such thing as a workout that targets just one specific body part. You can't pick and choose where to lose fat—it drops from everywhere at once.
But if you mix in some abs, squats, and other strength training, you can actually decide which areas you want to tone up. So, if you want a flatter stomach, hit those crunches.

Good luck...😉

Honestly, you might as well just fall in love and get hooked on running.
Especially if you’re already into swimming—then you’re basically unstoppable. 😉

Look, you don't have any single exercise that targets fat loss in one specific area..it’s not like you can lose fat from your stomach while leaving your arms alone!! Fat loss happens uniformly across your whole body...
But if you combine it with things like sit-ups, squats, and other strength training moves to tone up, then you can decide which areas you want to focus on—like hitting the abs specifically with crunches..

Good luck...😉

The general rule of thumb is that the first place you put weight on is usually the last place it leaves...so if you tend to pack on the belly fat first, that's going to be the hardest area to lean out during your weight loss journey.
