A guy I know had a nasty accident at a motocross race yesterday. It looked pretty grim—people actually thought he might be in a coma—but luckily he pulled through relatively okay. The catch is his kidney is swollen, and they might have to remove it, plus he’s lost his memory completely. Like, totally wiped. He doesn't even recognize his own brother or his girlfriend, and he has zero recollection of ever racing motocross...
I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience with this (hopefully not firsthand) and what the odds are that his memory comes back... I can't even wrap my head around the idea of not remembering my own life... just total emptiness, a complete blank slate...
If anyone knows anything about this, please let me know...

hm... memory loss following a head injury isn't an uncommon occurrence. Usually, the memories eventually resurface... though it is certainly necessary to get some neuroimaging done, likely a CT scan and/or an MRI

I can tell you this for a fact, based on my own experience.
I was in a coma, but only for a few days. I didn't lose my memory entirely, but I felt foggy for a long time after...
My memories are there, but the actual day of the accident is just gone. Like it never happened. Even now, five years later...

Then there was someone else who was in a coma for 45 days. When she woke up, and even looking back five years later, she isn't the same person she was before the accident.
So much stuff was wiped from her head. She’s a completely different person now.

But that’s just one case. I know a girl who went through something just as massive and still managed to finish her degree at state university.

So, your friend will definitely be okay. It’s just going to take a lot of work, a lot of faith, and a lot of time.
Good luck.

Things are actually looking up today. He’s starting to remember things again and recognizes the people around him. I guess he doesn't recall much else besides, like you mentioned, that one terrible accident...

A friend of mine can’t recall the accident either, beyond what people have recounted to her. I suppose she probably won't ever remember, given that it's been four years now. Everything else seems to be fine, I guess.

My grandma went through a stroke... she doesn't remember anything from that day at all, but for about six months afterward, she was constantly mixing up people's names, certain events, addresses, and stuff like that... thankfully, she's pretty much back to herself now.
