How do I password protect a folder?

👋 I’m looking to lock down some specific folders—basically, I want them to be read-only unless you enter a password... hm, I haven't really managed to set anything like that up using macOS, so maybe I'm just missing something obvious? Is there anyone out there who could recommend a smart little utility for this? Even just a name or two would be great... help!????
