Thoughts on The New World (2005)?

Has anyone caught this one yet?

We're talking about the latest from the legendary Terrence Malick...

Now, I personally consider The Thin Red Line to be one of the top 10 films I've ever seen, but I have to admit I actually turned this one off after about an hour... It just wasn't clicking for me. I'll probably try to finish it sometime this week, though I'm not holding my breath...

Such a shame...

It seems like his odd-numbered films hit different. His first and third were absolute masterpieces (Badlands and The Thin Red Line), but the second (Days of Heaven) and the fourth (New World) are just incredibly tedious. And honestly, with New World, the boredom isn't even the biggest issue...

I'd love to hear what everyone else thought if you've seen it...

Look at the cops watching me. I fired up the player, popped the movie in, then shut it down ten minutes later. There’s just no way I’m sitting through a Terrence Malick flick on a crappy DivX rip. Honestly, I don't even know why I downloaded it... I'll just wait for the theatrical release. 😉
As for being bored—I'm counting on it.

Caught this at the Human Rights Film Festival on Sunday!

Definitely worth a theater trip... highly recommend.

It clocks in at about 135 minutes.

It's Pocahontas...

A bit slow-paced, but just enough to keep things interesting without dragging.
👍 The lead actress was excellent—really great casting. The rest of the cast, C. Farrell, C. Bal, and C. Plummer, were solid as usual.

The women in the audience kept sighing, clearly expecting some wild scenes with Pocahontas, but... well, you'll see...😁

It’s basically everything that makes The Thin Red Line so special, just repackaged into this story about Pocahontas—though it definitely lacks a clear focus. You get nearly three hours of these incredibly poetic visuals, so you can't say there isn't plenty to look at... but honestly, with all that heavy meditation going on, you have to be careful not to drift off. The plot alone isn't really enough to keep you wide awake! 🙂

To me feels less like a standard movie and more like this sort of poetic meditation captured on film, which makes it absolutely stunning in my eyes.
Having actually spent some time out in Virginia, specifically near Jamestown, I’ve had a chance to really soak in that landscape and get a feel for the "New World" atmosphere the film is chasing, and man, they nailed the depiction... it's phenomenal.
I just sort of settle into this headspace where I'm listening to a symphony, so just let it ride, Terrence...

If I had to rank them, Days of Heaven and New World are right up there in terms of sheer quality and how much I cherish them—those two are definitely my favorites.

That’s really the only way I can wrap my head around it! Because even though there are some stunning shots and the acting is fine, I just didn't care about the characters at all... It felt more like an extended showcase to see everything Emmanuel Lubezki can do with a camera. And sure, the soundtrack definitely helps set the mood...
