MIAMI – Back in the early nineties, Doron Nof, an oceanography professor at a Florida university, came up with a theory about how Moses might have split the Red Sea, and he actually found some solid science to back it up.

He recently mentioned that his latest research uncovered a weird mix of water and atmospheric conditions near what is now northern Israel. This led him to think about ice formations in the Sea of Galilee. By looking at surface temperature records from the Mediterranean Sea and running the stats, he was able to model the dynamics of the Sea of Galilee—which people know today as the Sea of Galilee.

The study suggests that certain cold snaps occurring 1,500 and 2,600 years ago might align perfectly with the time Jesus lived. If temperatures dropped below freezing, a thin layer of ice could have formed on the lake's surface near the western shore. As Nof puts it, it would have been nearly impossible for someone watching from a distance to even notice a floating patch of ice.

Nof, whose work was published in the April issue of the Journal of Paleolimnology, offered this as a potential explanation for Jesus walking on water. "If you're asking if I believe someone can walk on water, the answer is no," he said. "Maybe he was walking on ice, I don't know. I just think there's a natural explanation here. We'll leave it to others to decide if our findings impact the significance of the Bible."

About 14 years ago, when he suggested wind and sea conditions could explain the splitting of the Red Sea, Nof admitted he dealt with some threatening emails, even though he maintained his theory actually supports the biblical account.

Now that his theory about Jesus walking on water is making the rounds again, those nasty emails are starting to pop up once more. One person even asked him if he’s planning to try and explain the resurrection in his next study.

Well... I never really dug The Beach Boys, to be honest. And The Seeds? Never even gave them a listen. But those other three are absolute legends—The Yardbirds and more than that, if you can even wrap your head around it—though I tend to view them more as part of that emerging blues scene, right alongside The Blues Brothers, The Rolling Stones, Creation Records, and all those other geniuses from that insanely creative era...

Look, anyone who’s actually into The Yardbirds clearly has their head on straight and decent taste in my book... though I can't say the same for those "mod" types...

I find those 60s mods a bit too soft... except for The Kinks and, to some extent, The Who.

I think 1965 would have been the era of Teddy Roosevelt. 😈 Maybe I would, maybe I wouldn't. 🙂

Here’s my top three picks for those 70s revival mod bands.

1. The Merton Parkas
2. Purple Hearts
3. The Vapors

The Beatles are in a league of their own, obviously. 🙏

I was genuinely floored when I dropped the needle on a Vapors record at a buddy's place. It featured 1) "Turning Japanese" and 2) ten tracks that were nothing more than a blatant attempt to photocopy the jam. 😕It’s rare to encounter a single that bears such little resemblance to the rest of the band's actual discography...

I don't recall the rest 😕

Honestly, back in '65, I don't think I would've fit into any of those subcultures defined by what people wore. 🙂
I mean, the Mods were cool enough with their killer music and sharp scooters, but all that other stuff they obsessed over? Just idiotic to me.
And the Teddy Boys didn't even have scooters to ride...
If it were '65, I probably would've been a blues head, hanging out at John Mayall or Corner gigs with the same crowd that eventually formed Jethro Tull, Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, and Savoy Brown... 😍
Man, now I've suddenly got this massive urge to sit down and blast every single album from those bands released up until about 1970. Just masterpiece after masterpiece. In my head, I can hear "Beggar's Banquet," "Train to Nowhere," "Shapes of Things," and "Green Manalishi" all playing at once... 🙂

In short, anyone who loves The Yardbirds has common sense and good taste in my book... though I can't say the same for their standing in the mod scene.

Oh, absolutely not!
Five Live was once hailed by Rolling Stone as "the most energizing upcoming tunes of the near future! (British Invasion - op.ed.)" 😁 Or perhaps something like: "You will find no better document of the power of blues mixed with rock, in a live setting, than this stellar LP."
To clarify and make things easier to grasp—I’ll explain it using a certain compilation called "For Mods Only..." It doesn't feature any hits, nor anything particularly upbeat. Rather, it's pure Northern Soul, that 60s American jazz-lounge style, and things along those lines. Truly enlightening, believe me. And yes, just like with that Naramča collection, I’m offering you the 5-disc compilation "This Is Mod" to check out and enjoy... 🙂

We are mods, we are mods, we are, we are, we are mods!

It was all about the look, really. As for the music, they were mostly spinning the same tracks as the rockers.

Error, what a blatant lack of understanding regarding the whole scene... the ENGLISH riding GERMAN bikes????? FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!
No Harley-Davidson, no Triumph, no Harley-Davidson (nor Indian Motorcycle, nor Harley-Davidson, nor Harley-Davidson, nor Harley-Davidson, nor Harley-Davidson, nor Norman)... and instead, you're cruising on a Ford. Good grief!

That’s all just for show—the music they actually listened to was pretty much the same stuff the rockers were spinning.

It’s obvious you racked up a massive amount of Mod points with that quote (watch out, Wronže!), but I suspect some people might dock you a few points because of that second sentence...
