Hey everyone, a friend of mine is looking for a new laptop, so I could use some suggestions.

The budget is around $2,500... $1167 Nothing fancy, just for general home use and maybe an occasional browser game.
He'll be financing it over 12 months at either Best Buy or Micro Center.

That's about it.
Thanks in advance. 👍

You can grab financing at Micro Center too. They usually offer better prices and longer warranties, so I’d personally lean toward this Dell:
The specs are plenty. Unless you're planning on heavy gaming, you won't need anything more than the integrated graphics.

If you're dead set on Best Buy, check out one of these:

The other site is down right now, but their prices are usually about the same as Best Buy—if not a bit higher.

I'll check in with my colleague to see what he thinks.
By the way, I actually went with that Dell Inspiron myself once. 😁

A few things to consider, though: He has two daughters, one in school and one in preschool—so I'm not sure if Linux would be practical for them?
I don't have much experience with Linux either, but regardless, I wouldn't want to be constantly interrupted just to show them how to navigate something or get a movie running on a streaming site...
Then there's his wife, who is a complete Facebook addict but knows absolutely nothing about technology, so again, I wouldn't want to deal with constant complaints because something "isn't working."
As you know, all of that combined can get exhausting...

Should I just send him the link for this Dell Inspiron, suggest he sticks to a basic version of Windows, and call it a day for Mike? 🤔

Honestly, Linux was probably just installed so the laptop doesn't arrive totally empty. You could literally pour yogurt on it and still have a better setup. 😉

Fine, no problem—I sent him the link for that Dell Inspiron, so we're all set.
Thanks for the help and the suggestions, Jeffrey Chavez6! 👍

PS: That Dell Inspiron you suggested to me about a year ago is still a beast, despite some rather questionable ergonomic and technical design choices...

You can actually snag an extra 10% off at Best Buy if you're a DMV member. Honestly, you could even have someone else buy it for you since they don't check IDs, just the membership card. 😁

Just thought you guys should know. 🙂
