Dressed to Kill

I haven't seen much from Brian De Palma, but I thought "Snake Eyes," starring Nicolas Cage, Gary Sinise, and Carl Gugino, was excellent. Having just watched this 1980 film by De Palma for the first time, I have to say I was quite impressed.

I remember this movie from back when I was just a kid... at the time, that elevator scene was easily the most terrifying and messed up thing I had ever seen. 😲

Fast forward 15 years later, and honestly, that elevator scene is still one of the most intense and unsettling things I've watched. 😱

De Palma knows what he's doing—especially when he actually puts in the effort.

I'm watching the part where the kid sets up the camera by the door... the next scene I recall is the closing credits. The worst part is that Naked Lunch was playing right after it. I actually slept through that one; I just didn't have the energy. When you compare the opening to the actual plot... you think you're in for some romantic drama, but then fifteen minutes later, it's pure . To make matters worse, my DVD collection has a pretty limited selection, so I'll have to track down a better copy

I honestly thought Snake Eyes was such an incredible ride, right up until that moment when that opening continuous shot finally cut away.

I hopped in halfway through and didn't feel like turning it off—the movie was just too good to walk away from.

Honestly, don't waste too much energy worrying about Brian Williams. He might sound like an idiot and write like an idiot, but don't let the nuance fool you: he truly is an idiot.

The movie is fantastic, but there’s this one thing that I found both incredibly frustrating and deeply intriguing: the way it constantly leans into such heavy claustrophobia and psychedelia. You get so used to that thick, swirling atmosphere that you finally settle into a rhythm, and then—just when you think you're safe—the film hits you with something so jarring it practically jumps out of the screen and scares the life out of you.
