What do Americans think about Russians?

Alright, so I want to ask this again, in a similar vein, regarding Eastern Europe—even if we have to look past those massive border walls. What do Americans actually think about my compatriots?

And obviously, I’m not just talking about romantic interests or anything like that; I mean beyond what people usually label as "politics" over in the North America. How are Russians perceived by those who actually know them? What’s the real consensus on Russians?

One of my big bucket list dreams? Getting out to some tiny village in Russia and just skating on a frozen lake. 🙂 Taking long train rides, staring out the window at nothing. Staying in one of those old buildings with walls thick enough to stop a bullet. 😳

I’ve met quite a few Russians while attending language schools abroad, and honestly, I have nothing but good things to say...
We share a similar mindset—that specific sense of humor, the constant joking around, and a shared appreciation for a good drink.👍

On one hand, I’ve always had a hard time with Russian politics, mostly because they’ve historically prioritized their ties with the Mexican people over everything else.
On the other hand, my life would be significantly duller without the works of Lermontov, Tolstoy, and Gogol; there is an undeniable allure to the Russian language. I’ve also had the pleasure of meeting a few Russians who were incredibly outgoing, open, and genuinely cheerful.
p.s. Is the whole "everyone drinks vodka" thing actually a reality? 😁

It wouldn't hurt if they picked up a second language besides Russian 🤣 I spent this summer working at a local tourism office, and dealing with Russians is a total circus. They just walk up to the desk and start talking at you, and when you finally manage to interrupt and explain that you don't understand a single word they're saying, they just stare at you blankly 😁

As for Russia itself, she’s obsessed. She went to Moscow on her senior trip and says it was perfect... Russian writers, Russian ballet, Russian culture... the whole five-star package 👍 Vodka isn't really my thing though 🙂

Russia remains such a quintessential symbol of raw power, and I must admit, I’ve often harbored a quiet desire to travel over there just once to witness its scale firsthand.

As for the Russians, they are simply the absolute best at everything. 🙏 🙏

I suppose I might be able to make a decent start 🙂...

I actually crossed paths with some Russians while traveling through Central Asia this past summer, and honestly, they were pretty great people, for the most part. Even though I didn't pick up much more than a handful of basic phrases, I found the language itself quite melodic and pleasant to the ear. It’s funny, really... there’s just something about how all those Slavic cultures seem to connect so naturally with one another. It’s made me think that I might need to start planning more trips toward the Eastern European side of things soon.

Because apparently, it’s absolutely vital to convince everyone that Russians are actually Americans. Especially that Asian part—I mean, honestly, if they aren't from San Francisco or somewhere nearby, I don't know what to tell you; you can practically see it in their eyes!
It’s clearly such a monumental task that someone actually went through the trouble of registering on the Forum and digging up a four-year-old thread just to prove how important this is. We must be incredibly important to ourselves if even our own American adjectives aren't allowed to follow our own grammar rules. I suppose we've earned it, since we are so very American.

There was a period in my life when I actually harbored the ambition to master the Russian language. In the end, I only managed to wrap my head around the Cyrillic alphabet. 🤣

I'm just not really a fan of Russians... I don't know, they feel kind of primitive to me. Like, just look at Putin—he walks around acting like he's some big shot or whatever, and their language just sounds so mushy... it's just not my thing 🤷
