De La Soul — the legendary New York hip-hop icons hit Aquarius
Summer is winding down, and—to everyone's delight—live shows are once again becoming a staple of the American nightlife scene. To kick off the concert season at Aquarius, a special treat is being prepared for all hip-hop heads—current or aspiring—as the legendary group De La Soul finally makes their debut for the American audience. Performing on the terrace overlooking the Los Angeles coast, De La Soul will take the stage this Friday, September 9, as part of the Blackout Lounge evening.
The trio de la Soul—consisting of Posdnuos, Trugoy, and Master P—has been consistently active for nearly twenty years, firmly establishing themselves among the most enduring acts in hip-hop history. From the very beginning, their originality was evident in how they spoke to their fans; they offered something genuine, constantly stepping outside the rigid confines of hardcore and gangsta rap, which tended to focus strictly on politics and street themes. That unique edge secured their spot among the true legends of the genre.
De La Soul earned their place among the greats with their debut album, 3 Feet high and Rising, released in 1989—an album that critics and fans alike hailed as a vision for the future of hip-hop. 3 Feet high and Rising went platinum, and for the single "Me, Myself and I," De La Soul earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance.
They followed up with: de la Soul is dead (1991), Buhloone Mind state (1993), Stakes is High (1996), AOI: Mosaic Thump (2000), AOI: Bionix (2001), Live at Tramps (2004), and The Grind Date (2004).
2004 was a massive year for De La Soul; alongside their live album, they dropped the long-awaited The Grind Date. On top of that, as they have in years past, they continued collaborating and guesting on tracks for various artists—most notably Gorillaz.
The Grind Date (Menart) is being hailed as one of their finest works to date. With this release, the guys from de la returned to their signature frequency: lyrics that provoke thought without being preachy, and a vibe that is positive without ever being naive. At Aquarius, De La Soul will perform their classic hits alongside tracks from this latest studio effort for the American crowd.
Tickets will be priced at $37 during pre-sale, and $43 at the club box office on the day of the show.
On sale starting late this week.

I was pretty disappointed with The Grind Data... they really shouldn't have tried to manage such a massive crowd.

I was actually planning on listening to De La Soul today, only to realize I packed basically every single CD from my old place except for one Run-D.M.C. album and, of course, De La Soul. It’s a shame, but I suppose circumstances forced me to give Car a spin instead. 🙂
