Bryan Sanchez86 said:It’s just the same old crap in different packaging. Americans don't even understand what "folk" means, and honestly, neither does the English language. It's basically a Germanism. 😉

Come on, stop talking nonsense.

Folk—it means common people, tribes, a race; just regular folks, kin, like a close-knit family or your inner circle.

That's straight from an English dictionary (Filipović); the whole word and concept actually came from English, especially when you look at music...

And since English and German are in the same language family anyway, most Germanisms end up sounding pretty much like anglicisms.😁

Bryan Sanchez86 did mention those "modern" metalheads, too.

And honestly, I think there’s a massive gap between pioneers like Black Sabbath and some American kids today—you know, the ones whose parents bought them their first guitars—who just blast noise, call themselves "death" anything, and act like they've actually done something.
It's all handed to them on a silver platter,

so where's the actual musical progression in today's metal scene?

My bad. You've got a point there.
But that doesn't mean you have to be rude. Telling someone they're talking nonsense is kind of uncalled for—I don't really see the need for it.

Maybe one day I'll be at a bar playing a set of seven tracks for a little bit of pocket change—just pure classics, you know? A little Beast of Burden, maybe some Sealed, Signed, Delivered, then Fat Bottomed Girls, plus those Eagles tracks mentioned earlier... just a real hits medley. And right when it’s finally my turn to play (since I already know how the guy before me tries to time things), the crowd will probably shut the jukebox down because it's suddenly eleven o'clock. I wouldn't even be able to grab another drink if I wanted to—not that there's much else to do given the local laws.

New Kid in Town is definitely one of my favorites. I've been scouring the web for Eagles videos lately. I found plenty of stuff, but I can't seem to track down New Kid in Town for the life of me. 😢

Thomas Diaz3 said:I guess Bryan Sanchez86 was right about today's metalheads—he did say that.

I mean, there’s just a massive gap between Black Sabbath—those actual pioneers of metal—and some American kids playing at it on guitars their parents bought them, calling themselves "death metal" or whatever other crap they come up with.
And they can basically do whatever they want—it’s all wide open to them, I guess.

I mean, where's all that progressive stuff in today's metal? I guess it's just hard to find these days.

Exactly. There’s a massive gap there. Even though Black Sabbath is officially labeled as heavy metal, they’re actually pretty far from what people consider metal today. Most metalheads originally branched off from hard rock—it's honestly tough to draw a hard line between those early metal pioneers and the hard rockers. It's kind of interesting that Zeppelin gets lumped into metal, too.

Yeah, I totally agree—it’s pretty rare to find metal musicians these days that I actually respect as real musicians. Just cranking the distortion to eleven and playing the same three riffs for fifteen minutes isn't exactly guitar virtuosity. I've always been more into people who can actually handle chords and solos at the same time on a single guitar.

Like I said before—taste is subjective. If someone likes it, they like it. Simple as that.

It’s kind of like comparing a bluegrass band to some old-school Nashville act—just different vibes, I guess. 😁

Maybe we just drifted from the Eagles straight into some weird local folk music. 😁
Just kidding. I think I just got my wires crossed regarding Dylan—he was close with the folk scene back in the day, sort of like being part of an American community arts group—whereas the Eagles were more about that country sound, or something close to it.

Just kidding. That guy just got his wires crossed with Dylan. Dylan was always close with the folk...

So now "that guy with Dylan" is the problem??? 😲 I told you you were digging your own grave... 😁

Back then, Black Sabbath was strictly hard rock, not metal.

I’ve never actually sat down and listened to the Eagles—I think I have maybe five or six tracks on some old CD buried at the bottom of a junk drawer somewhere—but I’m pretty sure I’ll dig them once I give them a fair shake (read: when I find their vinyl for pennies at a local thrift store). Or maybe I won't.
And yeah, I definitely have a soft spot for New Kid in Town. That's one of those five or six songs that makes me think I might actually like them.

Here’s a little bit of trivia for you: there was actually a legitimate shot at seeing the Eagles perform at Madison Square Garden this spring. The math checked out and everything seemed ready to go, but right before they could ink the deal, they jacked up the price by fifty times. Just a tiny little detail, 😁

What are you even talking about? Just because I messed up some grammar? I don't see how that has anything to do with the Eagles.

Maybe try M. Ward - Helicopter

If you're into New Kid in Town, you'll probably like almost everything they do. They have plenty of ballads like that (check out Lyin' Eyes). In my opinion, their best thing is how perfectly their vocals blend, plus that phenomenal guitar work—it’s just catchy stuff that sticks with you.
And I guess hotel California has basically become their anthem by now.

PS. The link is a recording from an '80 concert (video). Quality isn't great, and the file is tiny—only about 2-ish MB. The only downside is it's in .rm format (real Player).

Are you kidding? Man, that would have been such a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Probably the first and last time, too. I don't even know what I'd give just to catch one of their shows. Forget about seeing bijel dugme...😢

Now you've got me 🙂

I’m totally with you—looking back, Black Sabbath definitely feels like a flavor of hard rock.
But that’s just hindsight talking.
At the time? They were absolutely brutal—the undisputed pioneers of metal.

It’s like how the Beatles were considered "too wild" in their day, and now that sounds almost silly.

Standards shift—it's just how it goes.
Who knows, maybe in thirty years we'll find Guano or Sepultura on some "Soft Ballads" compilation. 😬

You never really know...
