Looks like the movie is finally done...πŸ™‚
Just like you can see from the photos I attached, it turns out that...
The movie isn't about Kurt Cobain....😁😁
...
Now we just have to see what kind of mess van Sant has cooked up for us... :-)

here's a little more...
..
The movie drops in France on 13 May 2005, following its showing at Cannes. Honestly, these are the ones that should probably be there too:

Woody Allen's "Match Point"
Lars von Trier's "Manderlay"
Jim Jarmush's "Broken Flowers"
David Cronenberg's "A History of Violence"
Michael Haneke's "Cache'"
Wim Wenders's "Don't Come Knockin'"

...
Also, here's the official movie site...so you might want to brush up on your French...
...
Oh yeah, Kim Gordon is in it too 😍....

Good day. πŸ‘‹

I just read in the papers that there's going to be a premiere at Cannes for a new Gus van Sant film. Apparently, it depicts the final days of a rock star's life, and that star bears a striking resemblance to Kurt Cobain.

Does anyone here know anything about this movie? And when might we actually see it playing in theaters?

Here is the blurb I found online:
......................
LAST DAYS is filmmaker Gus van Sant's meditation on the inner turmoil that engulfs a brilliant, but troubled, musician in the final hours of his life. Michael Pitt (The DREAMERS, HEDWIG and The ANGRY INCH) stars as Blake, an introspective artist who is buckling under the weight of fame, professional obligations, and a mounting feeling of isolation. LAST DAYS follows Blake through a handful of hours he spends in and near his wooded home, a fugitive from his own life. It is a period of random moments and fractured consciousness, fused by spontaneous bursts of rock & roll. Expanding on the elliptical style forged in his two previous films, Gerry and the Palme d'Or-winning ELEPHANT, van Sant layers images and sounds to articulati an emotional landscape, creating a dynamic work about a soul in transition.

Dwarfed by towering trees, Blake slowly makes his way through dense woods. He scrambles down an embankment to a fresh spring, and undresses for a short swim. The next morning, he returns to his house, an elegant, if neglected, stone mansion.

Many People ara looking for Blake - his friends, his managers and record label, even a private detective - but he does not want to be found. In the haze of his final hours, Blake will spend most of his time by himself. He avoids the people who are living in his house, who approach him only when they want something, be it money or help with a song. He hides from one concerned friend, and turns away another. He visits politely with a stranger from the Yellow Pages sales Department , and He ducks into an underground rock Club. He wanders through the woods, and he plays a new song, one last rock & roll blow out. Finally, alone in the greenhouse, Blake will look and listen - and seek release.
..............

So, what are your thoughts on the concept, Gus van Sant, or anything else regarding this subject?

p.s. I would have attached a photo, but I have no idea how.

'Last Days' isn't really anyone's cup of tea for two main reasons. First off, it’s definitely not for people who can't see past the music and the lyrics of Kurt Cobain. Second, it’s probably not for those who find this specific cinematic approachβ€”the one van Sant used to mark his previous film Elephantβ€”to be tedious or just plain played out. As for the first reason, I'm certainly qualified to judge, though I still have my doubts about the second.

I'm one of those people who, despite having a pretty strong sense of self-control πŸ™„ and making a conscious effort to avoid falling for labels, tropes, or symbols in our pop-culture bubble, finds something spiritually significant in the presence of Cobain. It feels like a social phenomenon of our era, something that gave a generation actual meaning instead of them just hiding behind the walls of some nostalgic, over-processed stuff from a few generations back. It was a moment that breathed life back into rock after it had been stuck in the swampy death throes of MTV. And that was 14 years ago.

Trying to make a movie about an event that serves as a massive pop-culture phenomenon is incredibly risky. van Sant showed that there is really only one way to handle it that makes any sense: a kind of visual nausea and agony, where cinematic time and space are stretched so thin they basically cease to matter. Only through that can something pure and innocent actually emerge. But the end of the film kills that feeling of purity, and by doing soβ€”as one character in the film suggestsβ€”the one who 'kills' something pure and innocent becomes pure and innocent themselves. Still, I walked out of the theater feeling dirty and guilty. I really wish the guy were still alive. That was today.

Has anyone here actually seen this movie yet?
It looks like it's playing at AMC from October 20th to the 26th... but why only until the 26th? Is this some kind of special limited preview before it gets a "regular" wide release later on?

Thanks! πŸ™‚

I think I’ll catch this at the theater sometime this week... not expecting much, probably just some pretentious art house rambling similar to Elephant, but whatever. I'm going.
Worst case scenario, I'll walk out halfway through. 😁

Hey everyone, just wanted to let you know about the total disappointment that was the hyped-up movie about the Last Days of Kurt Cobain... the film is a complete disaster!! The only thing it has in common with Kurt is a slight physical resemblance between the lead actor (Michael Pitt??) and him, and honestly, that's it... I’d suggest anyone thinking about seeing this in theaters just wait until it hits the video rental stores so you can at least enjoy a cigarette while watching it...

...man, let's get one thing straightβ€”the movie isn't even ABOUT Cobain... he was just the spark for van Sant to dive into his third film within that (unofficial) 'real-life trilogy'... πŸ™‚ ...so, you can't really blame the director for failing to deliver a solid biopic when that wasn't even what he was aiming for in the first place...
...as for the pacingβ€”well, that’s a whole different conversation... plenty of people claim van Sant is way too slow and just plain boring... opinions among my circle are pretty split... personally, I’ve got a soft spot for himβ€”even if it is labeled as 'arty'β€”because there’s this incredibly tender way he handles his themes... though I haven't seen Last Days yet, so I won't pretend to know... even if Michael Pitt doesn't exactly scream "leading man" to me at first glance πŸ™‚ but since Harmony Korine is involved, I guess I'll give him a pass πŸ˜‰

...by the way, nice signature... I really love it πŸ‘ although if it were up to me, I'd go with

...Overflowing senses, heightened awareness, I hear my blood flow, I feel its caress... Whispering cosmos, talking right to me, unlimited endless, God breathing through me...

...I couldn't help myselfβ€”Martin Gore is just the absolute best... πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™

I haven't seen Last Days yet, so I won't pretend to know, but I'll say Michael Pitt didn't exactly scream "lead actor" to me right off the bat. πŸ™‚ Well, since Harmony Korine is working with him, I guess I can let it slide. πŸ˜‰

Well, it depends on which Sant you mean... I know at least three of them. I actually worship the last one, mostly because of the theme he chose for the final film in the trilogy and how he tackled it. Honestly, a few other posts on this thread already prove that point.

..hmmm... are we talking about the Sant-type (as in Gus van Sant) or the Saint-type (as in holy figures)...πŸ˜•

...just kidding...πŸ™‚ πŸ‘

...I actually completely agree with youβ€”I love van Sant too. He’s one of those... hmmm... "sweet" directors πŸ™‚ in the sense that you can tell he truly cares about his characters and the themes he explores (...I mean, Elephant is the best proof of that), which I think is brilliant... though there really are people who see it differentlyβ€”I watched Elephant
with a couple of my closest girlfriends, and most of them didn't share my enthusiasm; they found the whole thing a bit too slow... but hey, everyone's entitled to their own opinion.πŸ™‚

hmmm... so I finally sat down and watched the movie on Tuesday. Went to the theater. Honestly, I hadn't done much reading up on it beforehand... 😬 no, it was fine. Not that the movie itself was fun.

The film wasn't exactly a blast. 😬

There were a few things I actually liked: Kim Gordon πŸ‘, Velvet πŸ™, and... hang on, that's about it. 😁

As for the rest.... meh... whatever...β˜•

***

I'm glad I stumbled upon this little bit of trivia:

Seven years before production , 14-year - Old Holger Thaarup of Denmark was originally cast as The lead. He didn't speak any English and Gus van Sant intended The rola to be silent ; van Sant then met 17-year old Michael Pitt and cast him instead.

Because it felt *slightly* weird to me how Blake spent like 95% of the runtime just mumbling "mmMMm..." under his breath. Like, seriously. πŸ™„

And yeah, Boyz II Men... 🀣

plus Blake & Blackie... πŸ˜‚
