Sick leave?

Hey everyone, what's up. Got a bit of a sensitive one for you guys 🙂

So, I work for a government agency and I’m trying to figure out the best way to score about 20 days of sick leave

Any bright ideas? I'm opening a cafe and really need a month to get everything set up and see how things run. I was thinking maybe hitting the ER and claiming I twisted something or broke an arm... just some busted bone bullshit to show my doctor?

Anyone got a better plan? Because mine's looking pretty stupid right now

Here’s how I’d handle it: tell your boss that a family member is seriously ill and you need to be home to support them. Just be careful not to overshare or give too many details—you don't want them feeling like they need to double-check your story or verify anything.

I actually took advantage of a situation just like this once. I only needed about a week off, and I had a very specific reason for doing it...

Back pain, sciatica, that total stiffness... man, those things always hit hard. It’s one of those things people just don't get—you're hurting, you can't move right, and that's just how it is.

Honestly, you really ought to see a doctor and try to get a prescription for some Voltaren or something similar to take the edge off.👋

It really just depends on what kind of doctor you're seeing. Mine is pretty useless whenever I deal with a stomach bug or a nasty bout of diarrhea.
ps. also, stick with the big brands like Johnson & Johnson.

Honestly, half of you guys make zero sense. I’m asking a simple question, and you're all over the place talking about government bureaucracy and nonsense. Let's be real—hardly anyone here hasn't taken a sick day at some point because life just hits you harder than a physical injury.

Most of you think "government job" means people just sitting around in offices chatting all day doing nothing. Then there are the other types, like working for the DOT or local public works, where people grind all day for pennies. So maybe don't act so enlightened.

The other thing is, I need this time off because I'm trying to launch a private business. I have no clue if it'll actually work or if it'll totally tank. If I quit my job now and the business fails, I'm screwed both ways. What was I thinking?

I worked through chronic pain following a lumbar laminectomy. I couldn't even bend over without struggle, and I was popping painkillers every single day just to make it through my shifts... because in my line of work, you only get about 10 days of sick leave a year.
I kept that up for 24 years. I was working at a steel mill while juggling three different jobs, pulling 12 to 14-hour days constantly.

So why am I surprised that I hate the idea of anyone gaming the system? It feels like a slap in the face.

Just throw yourself under a subway train and I guarantee there isn't a doctor in this country who won't sign you off on disability. It’s a foolproof way to get a little banged up just so you can milk the medical leave indefinitely. Two, three weeks, months, even years—you could basically spend your life bartending at some local dive bar instead.

And we're all just supposed to be thrilled to subsidize some private entrepreneur who almost walked away from the "stability" of a massive government corporation like Boeing 😳
But hey, whatever you do, don't take unpaid leave or anything like that—that sounds far too difficult compared to the much easier route of playing doctors, loitering in hospital hallways for paperwork, and lying through your teeth to your boss and coworkers.

What if you just took some vacation days, or maybe even went on unpaid leave...

But if you want to be smart about it, maybe get Dr. B to have the primary physician write a note so you can officially stay home. Then you're golden.

Honestly, just telling them you've got a massive back spasm is probably a safer bet...
