Well, the headline pretty much says it all... I’ve been stuck in the bathroom for days now, and honestly, I feel like I’m gonna pass out before anything actually happens.
I tried chamomile tea—nothing. Tried some Senna tea and it worked once, but then I had to do it again, and someone told me not to overdo it (but like, what does "too much" even mean?). I've been chugging water and eating tons of apples, and I even tried eating barley because a friend swore by it, but then another friend totally shut me down and said don't even bother...
Ugh... seriously, the stress this is causing is unreal!
I actually got a crazy headache from straining so hard😁 (I know, sounds ridiculous, but trust me, it’s not😢).
Anyway, if you guys have dealt with this before, how did you fix it?
What foods should I stay away from, and what should I be eating instead?
Thanks!

I’m not sure how often you deal with constipation, but if this is a recurring thing for you, you really need to be proactive about managing it. If I were in your shoes, I’d definitely go talk to a doctor. They’ll likely order an ultrasound and actually take a serious look at what's going on.
My mom has dealt with this on and off for years. I remember back in the day, during one of her OB-GYN appointments, she hadn't had a bowel movement in days. She didn't even think the doctor would notice or care about it. Well, he absolutely lost it.😲 😁
She ended up getting a full-blown lecture on how dangerous this is and why you can't just "ignore" the problem. He used this one pretty graphic example to make his point. He said, "Imagine if you stuffed a room full of waste and then walked into it after leaving it there as many days as it's been sitting in your gut. You would die from the stench." That’s basically what it’s like inside your body—only with much worse consequences for your health, obviously.

Look, I know it's risky to rely on laxatives for too long—whether it's herbal teas, suppositories, or whatever else—because your bowels can become "lazy," which just makes the whole problem way worse. From what I've seen with my mom (and honestly, I use the same methods when it happens to me; it happens to everyone, it's normal), you really need to cut back on certain foods, like bread and stuff like that. You have to prioritize fibrous vegetables, fruit compotes are always a great option, drink plenty of fluids (not soda), stay active, and then there's the world's most famous laxative😬 — black coffee on an empty stomach.
For me, personally, if I don't have some yogurt in the morning, I run into trouble.
You just have to figure out what works for your own body.
Good luck.👋

Lada InRED gave some really solid advice regarding diet, which is a huge part of the puzzle.
That said, getting a specialist's opinion is absolutely vital.
My wife struggled with non-dietary issues for 25 years, even while staying consistent with fiber drinks... nothing worked until she found this one thing.

After going through every test imaginable, they found she had a compressed common bile duct. The only things that actually provided relief were a very mild antidepressant—not because she was depressed, just for the effect—Imiprem, and Colofac 135 mg (Mebeverine hydrochloride tablets). Just so you know, Pfizer carries a version of that under a different name here in the States; it's used for IBS.

Here is the link for the softener that’s safe for long-term use:
Senna with Coloxil

Best of luck,

I have a friend who deals with the exact same thing. Most of the time, she just sticks to eating flaxseeds and muesli every single day.

Personally, I’d suggest trying some Gerolsteiner; that should do the trick too.

Or, if you're feeling reckless, try the wild combo of beer and yogurt... that would probably give anyone diarrhea! 😁

For me, coffee always gets things moving, though I don't really struggle with it that much myself.

Magnesium effervescent tablets can really help, and you’ll see even better results if you stay consistent with taking a probiotic.

Thanks everyone!
I don't usually deal with this stuff, unless I'm dieting and messing with my routine... then I just grab some Senna with Coloxil tea and I'm good to go.
But this time I actually had to use the tea twice (about a week apart, so hopefully I didn't overdo it...)
Yesterday was fine thanks to the tea, but today I went all out with beans, sauerkraut, rye bread, and dried prunes... if that doesn't do the trick, I don't know what will!😁
Also, I read somewhere that coffee helps when you have diarrhea, so I've been avoiding it—does that mean I can actually drink it after all?
And magnesium too, right?
It's probably also because I've been such a couch potato lately. I just finished a year of college, so most of my "exercise" is just moving from my book to the TV to my laptop...

At least tea works best for me when I need to clear things out!
Just take some Pepto-Bismol.

Maybe try some Gerolsteiner, though I guess it works best if you warm it up and drink it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Like Hannah Scott69 mentioned, you could also just mix some probiotics into pretty much anything you eat...
Good luck...
p.s. You really need to stay hydrated, otherwise you'll probably end up with a headache from all the effort.🙄

I think I finally fixed this issue for good! My new morning ritual is drinking a glass of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice mixed with some water—since there’s only about a little bit of juice, I just top it off with an equal amount of water. Then, I don't eat or drink anything else for half an hour. Sometimes I'll just eat the fruit and wash it down with a big glass of water instead.
Believe me, after just a few days, you'll be feeling so energized you could run a marathon! 😁

Seems pretty solid to me.
I'm hitting about 2 liters of water a day now (which is a huge jump since I used to be super dehydrated)
Plus, I'm getting in an hour or even ninety minutes of walking every single day
Oh, and honestly? That morning coffee is doing wonders...😁

I think the real culprit was just being way too sedentary before.

Hey Amy Doyle3, do you think I could get the same results using lemon instead? Because I can't even find grapefruit anywhere!😢

I honestly have no clue... I’m lucky because I absolutely love grapefruit—that bitter taste is actually my favorite! Maybe someone else who knows their stuff could give you a better explanation. 🙂

Melissa Gonzalez21,
I’ve been messing around with this all-natural supplement packed with "good bacteria."
It's basically like taking vitamins, just... different. They call them probiotics.

The price tag is honestly pretty ridiculous, but I figure it might be worth a shot...

Try some dried prunes—or better yet, prune juice—a spoonful on an empty stomach before you eat. You really need to steer clear of anything chocolate, too. As for that advice about drinking black coffee on an empty stomach? That actually helps stop my diarrhea rather than triggering it, provided there's no sugar involved... Just skip the sandwiches and stick to soups instead.

Yeah, muesli and those drinkable yogurts—that’s solid stuff on an empty stomach before you dive into your first meal. But what's the deal with Senna?

And honestly, after a big dinner, go for a walk first before settling in with a book... your brain actually functions better when you get some oxygen in your system...😉

I remember one of my exes used to deal with this all the time, and honestly, she always found relief by just drinking some tomato juice... I still can't quite wrap my head around why that worked for her, though.

I've definitely taken all your advice to heart for when things go south again
(though I’m still struggling with the whole "stay away from chocolate" thing😢 😁 )

senna is a plant where the leaves act as a super strong laxative—it's basically that "senna tea" you see everywhere
