Trouble burning DVDs

I've got a Sony + DVD burner running on Windows XP. Lately, I can't burn a single DVD to save my life. I tried ripping original movies first, then just basic files from a disc.
Don't think the burner is dead since it still handles standard CDs just fine.

I always stick to Verbatim blanks; they're the only ones that actually work with this drive.

When I try to rip movies using AnyDVD or DVDFab, I just keep getting an "Unknown ERROR".

Anyone got a fix?

Double-check the software... try testing it on a different machine (plug in the printer)... if it still fails, demand a replacement. You should be covered under warranty, right?

P.S. Which model are you running?

It's a Verbatim model.

I can't open up the drive because I'll void my warranty if I mess with the PC.

But I doubt that's the issue since regular CDs burn just fine.

Try a clean reinstall... seriously, grab the latest drivers too... then give it another shot.

Grab the latest version (maybe the one you’re currently running lacks the necessary drivers or support for DVD burning), then give it a shot...

That doesn't really prove much. Burning a DVD requires a lot more from the hardware than a standard disc does. If a fresh install of Nero 6 and updated drivers doesn't fix it, is it time to just take it to a repair shop?

I’m having a hell of a time with Nero 6 too! It feels incredibly glitchy. Sometimes it just refuses to burn a DVD, but then when I 🙏 it suddenly changes its mind and actually finishes the job.
So weird😢

Nero is absolute garbage when you're trying to rip DVDs—especially those original rentals from the video store—because it constantly throws an error claiming the disc is protected.

You seriously need to find a different program!!!!

Look, Nero isn't designed for illicit activities...

If you want to go down that road, use DVD Decrypter instead....

And DVD Shrink? That's what you use to compress a 9 GB file—since those rental DVDs are always dual-layered—down to a standard 4.7 GB disc....

I’d say your burner has probably kicked the bucket, BUT... before you go running off to file a complaint, maybe try this:

1) Look for a firmware update and install it, if there's anything out there.

2) Try a different version of Nero, or just test it with some other software. Like Alcohol 120 %. That's really just for images, but it'll tell you if the drive is still functional.

3) Test it with some different types of media.

Anyway, give one of those a shot. But honestly, if it was working fine before and now it isn't, I doubt much will help besides just buying a new burner.

Is anyone else having issues with their Samsung drive? I just picked this one up seven days ago, and when I first tried burning a movie to a CD-R, everything worked perfectly. But ever since then, every single disc I've burned has been a total disaster. The actual burning process seems smooth enough, but once I pop the disc into a player or my PC, the screen stays black, occasionally flickering for a split second before cutting out entirely—and don't even get me started on the audio, which is barely audible. PLEASE, if anyone knows what's going on here, I really need some help.
The same thing happened when I tried using a dual-layer disc too.
