Watching Romper Stomper (on TV last night) just sent me spiraling back to my own failed romances—specifically The Connection. That was the one. Everything else since has just been noise compared to it.
I mean, besides the fact they’re both skinny, they both play the whole love, breakup, makeup, leave, return cycle perfectly... right up until the end, when you just feel this desperate need to see them again. To find out what they’re doing, where they live, if they have kids.
If you actually hugged them again, you'd start wondering "what if." You'd wonder if our kids would look like this (not that you could even have kids with someone else).
It’s that urge to finally close the book on all those painful memories. To try and bury the name that still catches in your throat years after the split, leaving you feeling happy and miserable at the exact same time.
That person who enriched your life with their love, their fights, those tiny habits that used to drive you insane (but now you'd give anything to have them back). Someone you couldn't be with, yet you couldn't exist without. We all manage somehow, I guess, but at what cost?
Was it for the best that we broke up? Maybe we just met too early, or too late, or at completely different stages of life.
Some scenes in the movie reminded me of One Night Stand (the version with the happy ending).
Do you ever feel that itch to see that one, special person again after all this time, just to make sure they turned out okay?
Yeah. I do.
