Moderator-deleted messages

Is there any way for an admin to leave a little note where a deleted message used to be, just to let everyone know it was removed?

If that’s not currently an option, would it be possible to have one of those notes added at the spot of a deleted message if a user actually asks for it?

The mods have the power to delete a post and simply write—"a message was here, but it has been deleted"—right within the original author's thread, but honestly? I don't see why they would go through all that extra trouble! Especially since posts that get flagged often lead to a strike, and once that happens, the specific record of why the strike was issued usually gets wiped away—particularly during the appeals process.

If we had a feature for "deleting messages" alongside an option for "deleting messages and posting a deletion notice," then the mods wouldn't even have to manually type out notices—the software would just handle the whole thing automatically.

Like, if I were to ask you guys to post a heads-up that one or more posts have been taken down, would that be something you could actually do?

On days when the moderators have to go through and start deleting dozens upon dozens of posts—I mean, really clearing out the clutter—you have to realize just how much work goes into sending out all those individual notifications. When you consider that they’re scrubbing content that simply doesn't belong in the thread to begin with, you eventually arrive at the inevitable conclusion: nobody is actually going to want to take that on.

How does a sentence like 'xy posts have been deleted' actually benefit a discussion thread?

If management actually had the drive to upgrade the forum, we could easily toss in a plugin that automatically pings you whenever an admin decides on deleting messages, along with the specific reasons why, which would be so much better than cluttering up entire threads with moderator posts just to explain things. Honestly, there’s so much potential for improvement if they just cared a little more, but hey, I guess we'll just keep pretending it's still 2001.

But let’s be realistic—we can't expect the moderators to personally track down every single user just to explain why a specific comment was removed. Most of the time, it’s either off-topic clutter or content that simply violates our community standards. If you feel like a deleted post contained something absolutely vital, your best bet is to reach out to a moderator via private message and ask them to send you the contents so you have a record. Or, more importantly, given how unstable servers can be lately, why not just save your longer essays to your own hard drive before hitting submit?
