Like I said, if you used a different email client and exercised a little common sense, you wouldn't even need an antivirus. That Norton software of yours is okay, but just get that trash out of Outlook and you'll be fine—assuming you actually update your virus definitions.

The absolute worst part is when one of your buddies sends a mass forward where every single recipient is visible... I mean, you look at the header and see 15 addresses, then 20 from the previous chain, then another huge list from the one before that... 😠 all because people are just too lazy to use BCC. It's pathetic.

I am 100% with you on this... I've been stuck in that exact situation a few times now and it drives me insane...

I actually ended up sending out an explanatory email to everyone about why doing that is such a bad idea—I walked them through how to use BCC properly—and since then, it's been fine. 😉
People just don't get it... but if you take the time to explain it clearly and give them a better way to do things, there's no reason they shouldn't change their habits. 🙂

Brian Edwards78 is spot on... Even with Norton AV 2000, one "fake" email full of nonsense and you're done for. 🙂
Personally, I like Yahoo! Mail because it lets you scan attachments before you even download them... I've had plenty of times where a virus tried to sneak in... but with that feature, you know you're safe. 😉

Is this actually safe? I'm running Windows XP with NAV 2001 (virus definitions from Jan 10, 2003), and it isn't flagging anything.

The moment you see an .exe file attached to an email, it’s a huge red flag. Honestly, whether it’s actually malicious or just a mistake doesn't even matter—just delete 😉

I’m getting those same stupid pop-ups too, but honestly, it was just some ridiculous Britney Spears fan club thing, and when I took my computer down to the Genius Bar, they told me straight up that it wasn't even a virus—just some annoying prompt asking me to sign up for their club, though I can't say for sure what's going on with your machine.
