I was watching some clips from training camp today and it got me thinking about how much weight we put on these early performances. Every year, there’s always that one player who looks like an absolute superstar during the first week of practice. They’re faster, stronger, and more polished than anyone else on the field.
But then, once the actual regular season hits and the real intensity kicks in, they seemingly vanish. I remember back in my college days, I knew a guy who was the undisputed king of the weight room and looked unstoppable in every scrimmage. By Week 4 of his pro career, he was barely getting any snaps. It’s easy to look like a god when you're just running drills against guys who are also trying to find their footing.
I love the optimism, and it’s fun to get excited about a new face making a statement, but I’ve learned to keep my expectations in the basement until the real games start.
Do you guys actually get hyped for camp performances, or do you just wait for the first real kickoff to take anything seriously?
