My monitor died on me last night.
I caught this sudden smell of burning electronics, and then the backlight just tanked out of nowhere. The power light stays on, though. If I hit the menu button, I can barely make out some faint outlines, but everything else is just a total blur.
Has anyone dealt with something like this before?
Any idea what a repair job like this might run me?

We didn't get any info on the monitor model or anything else. Since your backlight died, I guess an electrician would have to take a look to figure out what's actually wrong. It could be something in the power supply feeding the inverter, maybe the inverter itself, or just a dead bulb or LED, depending on the specific monitor you've got.

My bad. It’s some kind of view monitor

Is it even worth fixing at this point? I mean, you can find plenty of decent monitors for $67 easily enough.

It’s highly unlikely you’ll get your money's worth out of a repair since those monitors are pretty ancient. I’m not sure what kind of quality you could even find for $67, maybe something used if you strike gold, though that’ll still be old tech. Then again, everyone has their own definition of a "good" monitor. But by today's standards, a "good" monitor really ought to have at least an IPS or VA panel. And you aren't exactly going to find something like that for $67 🙂

So, what exactly is an IPS/VA matrix?

Those are two distinct technologies—either IPS or VA. Basically, they're types of monitor panels that are miles ahead of the standard TN panels you find in old, or even newer, budget monitors. The difference is massive; just go on YouTube and search "TN vs IPS" and you'll see for yourself. Viewing angles, color reproduction, brightness, etc.

Look, even if cheaper manufacturing means TN panels seem destined for the scrap heap, stop hating on them so much. If they’re built right, they’re actually decent panels. They've come a long way lately—color accuracy and contrast aren't half bad, and the viewing angles are passable. Honestly, most gamers avoided IPS panels until very recently anyway because of all the ghosting and input lag...

Sure, but to get the kind of high-quality TN panel you're talking about, you'd have to spend enough money to just buy a PLS or IPS monitor instead—which wins in 99% of scenarios anyway. That’s why, generally speaking, people steer clear of anything TN, especially in the ~$333 price range. Those few LG or AOC models listed below $333 that feature IPS panels can outshine any TN monitor at the same price point. We're looking at those specific options in this thread, not some rare exceptions. 🙂

Give me a break. If I were just sitting on a pile of cash, I’d be buying the absolute best of everything. But looking at what I actually need my computer for right now, a used one from $50 is going to work just fine for me. I’d love to be driving a Mercedes, but I don't have that kind of money.

Look, it’s like I told you—everyone’s definition of "good enough" is different. For you, a 6 or 7-year-old used monitor from $50 found on Craigslist is plenty, but for an average gamer—meaning me—that would be a total disaster. Though, honestly, it feels like you can barely find a decent $50 on eBay these days anyway. An LCD, obviously.

Looking for some $67 for a repair job.
Thinking about grabbing one. I’ve got a 19-inch model and honestly, it's been solid—never had a single issue with it.

I'd honestly rather just fix mine so I actually know what I'm working with instead of picking up some half-broken monitor on Craigslist 😁

That’s exactly how it’s going to go
