The danger of overpaying for "steady" players

I feel like we see this all the time lately—teams handing out massive contracts to guys who are solid, but maybe lack that "X-factor" to actually win a championship. It feels like a huge risk to tie up so much cap space in someone who might just be a placeholder. Do you think it's better to go all-in on superstars or build through these reliable mid-tier guys?
