I was reading about some upcoming transfers this morning and it got me thinking about how we scout talent these days. It feels like every single time a teenager puts a ball in the back of a net, the media immediately starts treating them like the second coming of a legend.
I remember back in the day, you'd see a player pop up, they'd dominate for a season or two, and then they'd just... vanish. Now, it feels like the hype machine starts spinning before they've even finished their first proper training session with a top-tier club. Every big team seems to be racing to snap up these teenagers for massive fees based on "potential" alone.
Don't get me wrong, I love seeing young players break through, but I worry we're creating this culture where the pressure is so immense that half these kids burn out before they even hit twenty-five. Is it actually sustainable to build entire club identities around players who haven't even hit their physical prime yet?
Do you think we're overvaluing "potential" over proven, consistent performance?
