I was watching some clips of training camp over the weekend, and it got me thinking about the mental side of sports. It’s one thing to see a guy physically back on the field, but it’s a whole different beast when you consider the mental toll of a serious injury. You see the footage of them running drills, and everything looks fine, but you can't see the hesitation in their head.
I remember back in college, watching one of our starters come back after a nasty ankle thing. He looked physically ready, but he was playing a step too cautious, almost like he was waiting for the hit that already happened. It’s a weird dynamic for the rest of the team, too. You want your leader back at 100%, but you also don't want to see them get hurt again because they're playing through the lingering fear.
Do you think it's actually possible for a player to ever truly play with the same aggression once they've been sidelined for a long stretch?
