Does "consultancy" actually mean anything in pro sports?

I feel like every time a big name joins a team as a "consultant," it’s just a way to give a legend a paycheck without them actually having to deal with the day-to-day grind. Does anyone else think these roles actually impact the long-term development of the players, or is it mostly just branding?
