Hey everyone, I’ve been dealing with this for three days now and I'm losing my mind because I'm missing out on an in-game event and I can't play since I don't have my PC set up...

Let me break it down for you.

The issue is with my mouse. I bought a basic one for about $7. I've owned this exact model before and always buy it, but now when I plug it in and try to run the installation, I get this: Sorry about the quality; I couldn't take a better shot because my internet connection is acting up and won't let me upload anything else!
Basically, in that first photo, I tried everything to get through the setup, but nothing works. When I reach the final step where I need to hit Enter, it asks me to locate a file or insert a CD—but there was no CD included in the mouse packaging. It's a standard USB mouse. Here is the second photo for clarification:

I've tried a bunch of different things. My computer was working perfectly fine before this, so I have no idea what is going wrong. To make a long story short:

- It keeps asking me to point to a specific folder, but even when I create a new folder and try to direct it there, it fails.
- It's asking for a CD, but there wasn't any kind of disc in the box with the mouse.
- I've tried every possible setting within the installer, so please don't ask me if I've tried that already.
- Thanks a lot. I'm really hoping for some actual help here; I'd rather not have to haul this thing to a repair shop.😢
Best,

In the second photo, they're actually looking for a Windows XP installation disc, not a mouse driver CD.

Maybe you should just move up to Windows 7/8/10.

New mice don't play nice with ancient OSs. Better stay current and grab Windows 8.1... then things might actually work without the headache.

Just track down an older mouse. The real headache with modern hardware is what those tech kids always say—it’s not just about the mouse itself, it's the whole mess surrounding it. Support for Windows XP has been dead for ages, which means nobody is making drivers for it anymore. Windows needs those drivers to actually talk to the mouse, but if they don't exist, you're just stuck with a paperweight...

I'm just trying to answer what you asked in that other photo—it looks like it's asking for a Windows XP installation CD, probably for a specific driver.

Like the others mentioned, Windows XP is pretty outdated now, so you're probably going to run into more issues, especially when it comes to gaming.

Thanks a lot. I'm downloading Windows 7 onto my laptop right now so I can move it over to a USB drive for that PC.😉

Thanks a lot. I'm actually finishing up a Windows installation right now; once it's done on this PC, I'll move it to a USB drive and then I can install it on this broken one.🙂

Thanks, that's exactly what I'm doing right now. I'll let you guys know how it goes. 👍

It’s not quite that straightforward—if I'm following your logic correctly, anyway. Drivers are pretty much hard-coded to the operating system they were built for. So, just because you have a driver for your mouse on Windows 7, that doesn't mean it'll play nice with Windows XP. Which specific mouse are we talking about here?

I actually got it working—it was recognized during the Windows 7 installation itself—but now I'm running into connection issues. If anyone can help, check my other thread.🙂
