Is it just me, or has the concept of "retirement" in professional sports become almost meaningless lately? It feels like every time a legend announces they are hanging it up for good, we get a massive wave of speculation about a "fairytale comeback" just a few months later.

I remember watching some old-school legends back in the day; when they said they were done, they were actually done. You’d see them move into coaching or broadcasting and that was that. Now, it feels like retirement is just a strategic intermission. It’s almost like a brand management move—step away, build the hype, let the nostalgia settle, and then swoop back in for one last massive payday or a shot at glory.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good underdog comeback story. It's what makes us watch. But part of me wonders if we're losing the weight of the word itself. If everyone is always "potentially coming back," does anyone ever really leave?

Do you think these sudden comeback rumors are genuine reflections of an athlete's heart, or just a way to keep the conversation going?
