I was thinking this morning about how much of a rollercoaster the confirmation process has become lately. It feels like every time a major position opens up, we go through this intense cycle of high expectations, sudden rejections, and then a pivot to a "Plan B" that everyone just sort of accepts because the vacancy is too glaring to ignore.

It makes me wonder if we’re actually vetting people for their actual skills anymore, or if it’s just become a strategic game of musical chairs. Sometimes it feels like the goal isn't to find the most qualified person for the job, but rather the person who can survive the most political friction without causing a total meltdown.

When the first choice gets blocked, do you think the second choice is usually a genuine step up in competence, or just the most "palatable" option left on the table to keep things moving?
