I was thinking about this today while watching some old footage of a player I used to follow. It’s wild how one bad stretch of luck or a physical setback can completely derail someone's momentum just when they feel like they've finally arrived.
I went through something similar a few years back with my own career path. I had worked so hard to reach a specific milestone, only to have a sudden change in circumstances knock the wind out of my sails. For a while, I couldn't stop dwelling on how much easier everything would have been if that hadn't happened. It felt like the universe was just pulling the rug out from under me.
But looking back, I think those moments of being sidelined are actually what build the grit you need for the long haul. It's easy to be confident when everything is going your way, but the real test is how you carry yourself when you're stuck on the bench—metaphorically or literally.
Do you think people are naturally resilient, or is that kind of toughness something you can only learn through getting knocked down?
