Hey everyone. I'm looking to drop an SSD into my Dell Inspiron. From what I can tell, the old HDD uses SATA. Modern SSDs are SATA 3, so I'm wondering if the connector is the same and if this junker will actually run okay with a new drive. I found a cheap SanDisk 128 option for about $60 and the reviews look solid. Anyone got a better suggestion? Thanks for the help. Honestly, I can barely keep up with how fast tech moves these days 😵 My 70-year-old dad uses this laptop for browsing, banking, and checking classifieds, so he doesn't really need massive storage unless a 256GB version is basically the same price.

The SATA version doesn't matter here. It'll run on SATA II, which is still way faster than a traditional hard drive, so you won't notice any real difference compared to SATA III.

Just order the drive online. Even if you have to pick it up at a Best Buy, at least you can return it if there’s a compatibility issue (it should work in theory, but with laptops, you never know when some random hardware quirk will pop up).

And I don't know how old this laptop is, but make sure you switch to AHCI mode during installation if it's currently set to IDE.

Alright. Thanks. I mean, something’s bound to go sideways eventually. It always does for me. 😁

So I'm looking at it—laptop's old, but it’s not ancient history either. Maybe 2015 or thereabouts.

It should work fine, in theory. Just use a macOS installation USB to wipe the SSD.

I always buy this stuff online. At least you get those 15 days to return whatever if you change your mind.
