How can I make my Microsoft Surface Pro more useful?

I have this "hybrid" device mentioned in the title that came pre-installed with Windows 10, but honestly, it runs terribly...
It's running an Intel Atom Z3735F (2M Cache, 1.33 GHz) paired with 2GB of DDR3L 1333MHz RAM...

What should I install on here to make it faster and actually usable for daily tasks? Maybe Windows 7?
I suppose Linux would be the easiest way to go, though I am worried about whether the drivers will even work given how specific the hardware is...

Linux should run just fine. If all else fails, it’s not like you lose much by giving it a shot. Windows 7 isn't even going to recognize your HW anymore.

I was given a suggestion to try out a lite version of Windows 10... I guess, maybe, it would actually work okay?

Usually, Linux includes most drivers, except for really specialized stuff (like the lighting on a Razer Blade, for example).

You could give it a shot, but honestly, your biggest bottleneck is having only 2 GB of RAM. At that point, you're better off betting on a specialized Linux distro designed specifically for machines like yours.

I guess I'll try W10 Lite first since I have it on hand, and then maybe Peppermint because it seems like the most complete option for the Surface, though I'll likely still need to tweak a few things manually...
